All 51 faculty, staff and students are invited to attend the inaugural “Renewing Our Civic Culture” lecture and dinner on Friday, Oct. 17, from 4-7:30 p.m., in the 51 Student Union Ballroom.
This event will feature a guest lecture by Jed Atkins, dean of the University of North Carolina’s School of Civic Life and Leadership, followed by a meal with facilitated dialogue at each table. The dinner offers attendees opportunity to experience civil dialogue in real time while further engaging the speaker’s ideas. .
Atkins’ talk, “The Virtues of Civil Discourse,” will address how civic discourse can be taught and practiced on campus, equipping all of us to better bridge divides and live as members of a pluralistic democracy. This free event is open to the public and made possible by a grant from the Tommy G. Thompson Center for Public Leadership. It is hosted by 51’s Division of Community Empowerment & Institutional Inclusivity, in collaboration with the Division of Student Affairs, Honors College, Department of Philosophy, Department of Political Science and Classics Program.
