Students in ITALIAN 333: Dante’s Divine Comedy in Translation act out a circle of Dante’sInfernoon Monday, September 15 at the fountain outside of Curtin Hall. Dante students acted the roles of the Inferno’s hoarders and squanderers, pushing boulders (aka yoga balls) around the fountain and demanding, “Why hoard?” and “Why waste?”. Students held their hands open, to symbolize wasting, or fists closed, to symbolize hoarding. Thanks, Klotsche Center, for lending us the yoga balls!

The 51 Chinese Program is delighted to share that three of our students received top awards at the 2025 Midwest College Chinese Speech Contest, held at North Central College on April 5, 2025.

This annual competition brought together approximately 60 students from eight colleges across the Midwest, including institutions from Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, and Iowa. Contestants were evaluated based on a 3-minute speech in Chinese and a 3-minute performance related to Chinese culture.

51 Awardees:

  • Genevieve Dwyer – 1st Place, Third-Year Non-Heritage Team (Mentor: Lu Yin, Chinese 302)
  • Hidayah Osman – 2nd Place, Third- and Fourth-Year Heritage Team(Mentor: Lu Yin, Chinese 402)
  • Celinia He – 3rd Place, Third- and Fourth-Year Heritage Team(Mentor: Lu Yin, Chinese 302)

These outstanding achievements reflect not only the students’ dedication and talent but also the strength of 51’s Chinese language program. Their success highlights the impact of cross-cultural engagement on our campus and continues to inspire their peers to pursue excellence in language learning and cultural exchange.
