51ÁÔÆæ Faculty Service Awards

Honor a 51ÁÔÆæ Colleague for Outstanding Work at the University or in the Community

Who is Eligible:

Tenure track Assistant Professors, Associate Professors and Professors Administrative assignments must not exceed fifty percent of a nominee’s appointment in any of the past 3 years.

51ÁÔÆæ Distinguished University Service Award

This award recognizes outstanding service to the University community. Examples of university service recognized include committee service, curriculum development, mentoring and sustained service contributions. Nominations may be submitted by students, faculty, staff, and alumni.

Amount of Award: $1,500*

Limitations: Nominees must not have received compensation, other than their normal salary, for the recognized work.

Submit ONE (1) electronic copy of the following:

  • Nominee’s CV
  • Summary of the nominee’s university service contributions
  • No more than three additional letters of support

51ÁÔÆæ Distinguished Public Service Award

This award recognizes outstanding service in Milwaukee and the entirety of the state of Wisconsin. Service includes all professional activities that contribute to the public good, enhance 51ÁÔÆæâ€™s reputation, and carry out the university’s mission. Examples of public service recognized include public lectures; media appearances and presentations; conducting or coordinating applied research, education, or planning; consulting, evaluating, and advising; serving as a resource to others and work on decision-making panels and boards. Nominations are welcome from inside or outside the University community.

Amount of Award: $1,500*

Limitations: Nominees must not have received compensation, other than their normal salary, for the recognized work.

Submit ONE (1) electronic copy of the following:

  • Nominee’s CV
  • Summary of nominee’s public service contributions
  • Not more than two letters of support from 51ÁÔÆæ faculty members
  • Not more than two letters of support from community members familiar with the Nominee’s work
  • Not more than one letter of support from student/academic staff

51ÁÔÆæ Distinguished Undergraduate Teaching Award

Deadline: October 27, 2025

51ÁÔÆæ recognizes outstanding undergraduate teachers by granting the Distinguished Undergraduate Teaching Award.  Awards carrying a $1,500 honorarium* are granted each year. Nominations for Awards may be submitted by the nominee, students, faculty, academic staff, and departments.

Eligible Nominees Must:

  • Be an Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Professor at 51ÁÔÆæ*
  • Demonstrate excellence in classroom teaching
  • Teach an undergraduate course in either Fall or Spring semesters, 2025-2026
  • Have worked at 51ÁÔÆæ full time for at least three academic years
  • To be eligible to receive the monetary award and to be recognized at the award ceremony, award recipients must remain employed through the end of the calendar year of the ceremony. Exceptions may be made for employees who have retired before the end of the calendar year.

    *51ÁÔÆæ includes: UW-Milwaukee and 51ÁÔÆæ at Waukesha

To Nominate Someone for the Award:

  • Submit ONE (1) electronic copy of the following:
    • One nomination letter, no longer than three pages, describing why the nominee merits the award (e.g., command of subject, classroom organization, teaching innovations, stimulation of learning, awareness of student needs).
    • Nominee’s CV
    • Summary of student evaluations
    • Undergraduate course teaching schedule for Fall 2025 and Spring 2026.

Following the nomination, the Awards and Recognitions Committee may request additional material from the candidate, meet with the candidate, and/or attend (physically or virtually) at least one of the nominee’s classes.

* The stipend is contingent on budgetary constraints; we cannot guarantee a cash award in 2026. To be eligible to receive the monetary award and to be recognized at the award ceremony, award recipients must remain employed through the end of the calendar year of the ceremony. Exceptions may be made for employees who have retired before the end of the calendar year.
