Paid Summer Undergraduate Internships in Geodesy!

APPLICATION DEADLINE: February 15, 2026 5 PM Eastern Time

What is Geodesy?

Geodesy is the study of the Earth’s shape, size, orientation, and gravity.  Measurements of these parameters are used to determine precise coordinates of points on Earth and track how those points move over time.  Modern geodesy uses tools such as high-precision GPS/GNSS*, satellite-based radar, and land- and airborne laser scanning systems to improve our understanding of a wide range of topics including road building and construction, management of crop planting, navigation, earthquake and volcanic hazards, and sea level rise.

Geodesy draws from a number of other fields including math, physics, geology, environmental science, computer science, and engineering and opens pathways to a variety of careers in government, academia, and private industry.

The ~10-week Potter Internship provides students with hands-on experience in geologic research and fieldwork pertaining to issues relevant in Illinois. It is open to any undergraduate and master’s student currently enrolled. PRI has been running this program for multiple years with some great success. My coastal research group has had multiple interns since 2022 in which I assisted, however this year I am searching for my own intern. My colleague is searching as well. PRI is located on UIUC’s campus, however since the coastal group operates out of a field office just over the Wisconsin border, we have the ability and the need to find interns in the greater Chicago/ Milwaukee metropolitan area that is able to commute. Anyone is welcome to apply for any of the projects, but if there is interest in staying local, our internship projects are:

  • Bathymetric Assessment of Nearshore Morphodynamics Along the Illinois Beach State Park Breakwater Chain (my project)
  • Monitoring Storm Activity Along the Illinois Coast of Lake Michigan Using Passive Seismic Recording Networks (Dr. Mitchell Barklage’s project)
