Undergraduate programs in the English department offer students a rich and flexible curriculum grounded in the study of literature, language, and critical theory, as well as the history, theory, and criticism of film and television.

Through courses that span historical periods, genres, and global traditions, English students develop the skills essential for success across a wide range of careers. Small, discussion-based classes encourage close reading, thoughtful writing, and meaningful engagement with texts. Whether exploring Shakespearean drama, contemporary fiction, or cultural studies, students are challenged to think deeply about how language shapes meaning and reflects the complexities of human experience.

The Film Studies program offers a cross-department major and minor that blends courses in Film Studies with classes from English, Art History, Comparative Literature, French, Italian, and Japanese. The program promotes the study of cinema and television in their aesthetic, social, cultural, political and technological contexts and expands students’ understanding of cinema and television as essential components of our global culture.
