We would like to thank all people involved that enabled us to offer ten young adults laboratory experiences and knowledge under the umbrella of the at the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee. During the last eight weeks, our students learn aspects of chemical and biochemical laboratory safety and learn to use general laboratory equipment.

Group of nine Re-Charge STEM program participants holding certificates in an office or classroom setting, 2025

We are thankful to our graduate students Ethan Kowalczyk, Omolola Adedeji, Sharmin Shampa, and Collin Acheampong that were tasked to conduct daily hands-on and class room exercises. The new 51 chemistry building offered an outstanding laboratory infrastructure to support various aspects of the Re-Charge Stem program curriculum. Many laboratory sections were supervised by Manager Anna Benko, who coordinated with several companies to integrate this program with the local industry. For instance, we had teaching our students to use auto-titrators for water content and was working with our students to develop their resume and shared tips and trick for job interviews. Organic chemistry was another focus of the program. Students performed organic synthesis, analyzed their samples and used several strategies to purify their products. During the course of this section, students learn to handle harmful chemicals and understand the properties of organic compounds in addition to several analytical method for compound characterization. Some of the highlights of the program were site visits at , , , , , and . We like to thank representatives of the companies for their time and dedication to education.

On the last day, companies interviewed our students to potentially fill open laboratory technician positions. Our students were very enthusiastic and showed great diligence and perseverance. We are looking forward to continue this program in 2026 with available funds from the Universities of Wisconsin. For 2027, we are looking for sponsors that will enable us to continue offering this program. Donate .

The inaugural Wisconsin took place at the Medical College of Wisconsin and was attended by nearly 500 scientists including undergraduate and graduate students from local educational institutions. The conference was a great success supported by an exceptional organizing team including MCW faculty . Randeep Pangli from UW-Whitewater was selected for the MIDD sponsored poster award for his contribution ” Boron Prodrugs of Niclosamides for the Treatment of Non-Alcoholic Steatohepatitis”.

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has emerged recently as the leading cause of chronic liver disease, affecting ~20% to 30% of the population in United States alone. Currently, there are no clinically approved drugs specifically indicated for the prevention and treatment of NASH. Repurposing of niclosamide might represent a new treatment strategy, which was evaluated by Mr. Pangli by synthesizing new  analogs of niclosamide to improve water solubility, oral bioavailability, and metabolic stability.
