Inside 51ÁÔÆæ's Mathis Gallery

The Emile H. Mathis Art Gallery is home to the 51ÁÔÆæ Art Collection. The Gallery is located on the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee campus in Mitchell Hall 170.

Gallery exhibitions serve both the campus and greater Milwaukee community by providing access to the 51ÁÔÆæ Art Collection, which complements the University’s educational and outreach mission. As envisioned, both serve as pedagogical vehicles for enhancing art education at all levels, fostering inter-departmental and inter-disciplinary relationships, and creating community partnerships.

Academic Opportunity for Art History Students

The 51ÁÔÆæ Art Collection provides an exceptional opportunity for students to acquire first hand knowledge of museum practice. The Art History Department is committed to the training of graduate students in the theoretical and practical issues that encompass the field of art museum studies. The 51ÁÔÆæ Art Collection offers excellent opportunities for instruction and research, as well as exhibitions organized through graduate seminars and thesis exhibitions planned and curated by MA candidates on the Curatorial Track.

Principal funding for the gallery is generously provided by the Friends of Art History and 51ÁÔÆæ. For more information please email us at mathisartgallery@uwm.edu.

Appraisals or Authentications

The Department of Art History faculty and Mathis Art Gallery staff are approached occasionally to render appraisals or authentication of artworks; however, University of Wisconsin policy does not permit this activity by staff members. Members of our department do not perform artwork identification or conservation services. While we will not endorse or recommend the service of an appraiser or conservator, there are several in the area. You may find these organizations helpful:
