Custom AI Without the Cloud: Privacy and Power for Every Instructor

Joseph Retzer

While off-the-shelf AI like ChatGPT are popular, many instructors worry about data privacy and generic “one-size-fits-all” limitations. In this session, Joseph Retzer will demonstrate how he created a secure, custom AI assistant that runs entirely offline to keep sensitive student and research data private, while still being able to summarize complex data and generate professional reports. Following Dr. Retzer’s session we’ll explore ways to build your own specialized AI tools, and move from being an AI consumer to an AI creator.

This session will be held in Engelmann Hall (Room B73), and online via Zoom. Registration is not required but helps us prepare.

October 24, 2025 @ 1:00 pm – 2:30 pm

Overview

AI is rapidly transforming higher education—but how we understand and respond to these changes varies widely. As artificial intelligence becomes more present in our classrooms, offices, and daily work, many of us are navigating uncertainty, curiosity, and concern. Some feel excited by the possibilities, while others feel unprepared or left out of the conversations shaping its future on our campus.

This session offers a space to come together and talk about it. Join colleagues from across 51ÁÔÆæ for a dialogue-focused event where we’ll explore our diverse experiences with AI, share perspectives, and build skills for engaging in thoughtful, inclusive conversations about the technology. You’ll observe a structured dialogue among 51ÁÔÆæ colleagues representing different viewpoints, then participate in guided table discussions to reflect on how AI is showing up in your work—and what it means for your role moving forward.

This session is designed for faculty, instructors, students, grad students, and staff. All perspectives welcome—no AI experience or expertise required.

Vibe Coding for Teaching and Research: Building AI Workflows that Work TBA

Lane Sunwall

As AI tools grow more capable, they can also become overwhelming—especially for complex tasks. This session introduces vibe coding, a method for collaborating with AI step-by-step to create usable tools, activities, or digital resources. We’ll examine what happens when prompts are too broad (AI burnout and hallucination) versus when they’re structured as a series of build-and-refine steps. You’ll leave with practical models for guiding AI through multi-stage academic projects.

This session will be held online via Zoom. Registration is not required but helps us prepare.

Building Your AI Teaching Team: Experimenting with Custom Assistants for Learning and Scholarship

Stuart Moulthrop

What happens when a graduate seminar builds its own AI collaborator? In this session, we’ll explore how Stuart Moulthrop designed and introduced a custom GPT to support reading-based discussion and scholarly experimentation in a theory course. The project began as a practical test—what could AI do with a semester’s worth of readings—but evolved into a reflection on what it means to be a scholar, teacher, and creator alongside AI. Join us to discuss how custom assistants can support learning, reveal the limits of current tools, and spark new conversations about co-creation, resistance, and the future of academic work.

This session will be held online via Zoom. Registration is not required but helps us prepare.

Building Student Research Skills Through AI Analysis

May 7  | Gillian Rodger

What happens when we treat AI-generated content as a starting point for teaching research skills? Join us as music professor Gillian Rodger shares how she transformed potential challenges with AI into opportunities for developing critical information literacy. Through a carefully designed unit that combines AI experimentation with library research skills, Rodger demonstrates how analyzing AI’s strengths and limitations can enhance students’ understanding of academic research. This workshop will explore how intentional engagement with AI tools can help students develop stronger research skills, better source evaluation abilities, and a deeper appreciation for authentic academic work.

This session will be held both in-person and online via Zoom. Registration is not required. However, if you plan to attend in-person please register below – so we know how many much food to order
