The CETL Support Commons will be closed Tuesday, Dec. 24, through Friday, Dec. 27 and Tuesday, Dec. 31 through Wednesday, Jan. 1, over the holidays. We will be working remotely from Monday, Dec. 23, through Friday, Jan. 3.

Normal Office Hours are Monday through Friday9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Student Success in the Classroom

In Fall 2024, Academic Affairs and the Center for Advancing Student Learning (CASL) hosted over 220 faculty and staff in departmental teams to develop scalable action plans for improving student success and learning at 51ÁÔÆæ via intentional action at the course level. The inaugural Student Success in the Classroom Summit focused on integrating and scaling three evidence-based practices: high-level performance expectations, transparent assignment purposes, and inclusive student feedback. A follow-up gathering later in the semester focused on change strategies that emerged from the departmental action plans: creating space to share practice, using mid-semester feedback surveys, and utilizing peer review processes.

Chanceller Mark Mone provided opening remarks, sharing how a focus on a consistent student experience across classes could improve student retention and overall success. from Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs, Canan Bilen-Green, Chancellor Mone, and Provost Andrew Daire.

National and local 51ÁÔÆæ data were shared by EAB presenters to help faculty and staff better understand the student populations of today including their needs and success indicators. , , or .

Current Practices and Efforts  

There are a variety of initiatives and efforts underway across 51ÁÔÆæ to support advancing student success in the classroom. As part of the Fall event, Vice Provost for Academic Affairs, Dave Clark, moderated a faculty panel including Anja Blecking (Chemistry & Biochemistry), Benjamin Church (Materials Science and Engineering), Kent Redding (Sociology), and Kristin Sziarto (Geography). share how they are implementing student success related practices in their courses ranging from online to large lecture hall to seminars.

Implementing Evidence-Based Success Practices 

The focus of the department teams implementing student success in the classroom efforts is the intentional scaling of high-impact evidence-based practices across courses. Department teams explored, within their context, how to ensure that every student experienced the same evidence-based success practices. from the CASL team presentation. Change Strategies to Support Teaching and Learning

Following the initial gathering, departmental teams returned to share updates on their action plans and learn more about three change strategies identified in the majority of action plans. on student success strategies from the CASL and Academic Affairs presentation. On October 2nd,  will share how – after some hesitation – he began to experiment with AI to help him quickly build reading comprehension questions. Mark found that by partnering with AI, the quality of his questions improved, the time he took to build these questions decreased, and he was able to do more low stakes assessments in his course, which together improved his student learning outcomes.

Revolution Lightboard

A lightboard offers a powerful solution for your classroom and CETL staff is close at hand, working with you to set up and use the equipment.

Lightboards are large panes of glass similar to a traditional whiteboard. While on camera, instructors are able to draw equations, write notes, and edit on-screen slides mimicking a face-to-face classroom experience. Contact cetl@uwm.edu for more information.

CETL's New Homepage

We are excited to announce the launch of our updated Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL) website on Tuesday, September 10, 2024!
You can access the new site at the same address: /advancing-learning/.

Workshop Registration Transition:
Starting on Saturday, October 5, 2024, all event registrations will take place on the new Events Calendar page at /advancing-learning/events/. To help with the transition, we will provide a video tutorial, which will be included in next month’s newsletter and featured on the Events Calendar page.

Accessing Past Workshop Data:
Our current workshop registration website, , will host its final event on Wednesday, October 2, 2024, and remain accessible until Friday, August 1, 2025. We encourage instructors to export their attendance data before this date, as the information is of value for CVs and performance evaluations and will no longer be available after August 1, 2025.

We look forward to sharing our new site with you and appreciate your support during this transition!
