{"id":103,"date":"2016-05-18T10:35:12","date_gmt":"2016-05-18T15:35:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/writing-center\/?page_id=103"},"modified":"2024-04-04T13:50:44","modified_gmt":"2024-04-04T18:50:44","slug":"strategies-for-graduate-writers","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/writing-center\/resources\/graduate-resources\/strategies-for-graduate-writers\/","title":{"rendered":"Strategies for Graduate Writers"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Based on experiences in 51ÁÔÆæ&#8217;s Writing Center as well as in other university writing centers, we offer the following guidelines so you can plan accordingly and make the best use of your session.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How much time to allow?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>For longer projects, a series of appointments works best.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Writers can <em>estimate<\/em> they will be able to discuss up to five pages per 25 minutes. Obviously, estimates will vary depending on the writer and the paper.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Writers may reserve up to two hours of reserved appoints per week and walk in after that, within reason, during the academic year September-May.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Writers should plan on no more than one session a day, reserved or walk in.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>During the summer when we have limited staff and hours, writers may reserve two hours per week and walk in one additional hour per week.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Before Your Session<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Identify a particular section on which you wish to focus.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Skim this section.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Prepare a few specific questions you wish to address with the tutor.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">During Your Session<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Be prepared to read aloud selected portions of your work.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Talk us through the paper and correct us if we misunderstand something.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Discuss your prepared questions with the tutor.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Expect tutors to ask lots of questions in return.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Further Strategies to Use During and After Your Session<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Focus on heading\u2014do they reveal a plan?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Review the organization. Does it follow an appropriate pattern, genre or format for your discipline, e.g., APA or MLA documentation; lab report; compare\/contrast, problem\/solution; theoretical, practical, chronological?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Compare the introduction and the conclusion\u2014do they complement each other?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Look for topic sentences. NOTE: Even papers with subheadings benefit from topic sentences, or &#8220;sub-theses,&#8221; near the beginning of each section.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Look for transitions. Do they help you navigate the paper? Are they vague or are they missing altogether?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Remember tutors&#8217; questions, using them to clarify your own prose and logic.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Final Editing Tips<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Identify patterns of errors in your writing.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Review a handbook and work with a tutor to understand how to correct errors.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Recognize when it may be best to hire a professional editor or proofreader.
