Understanding the language and culture of Russia has become increasingly important, and the value of knowledge and skills in this area is anticipated to continue to grow.<\/p>\n<p>Only about 15% of the colleges and universities in the U.S. are able to offer a Russian major, and 51ÁÔÆæ is among this small group. This Slavic language is growing in importance and in value as the political and economic dynamics of Russia and the region are evolving. Russian is one of the five official languages of the United Nations and has more than 200 million speakers around the world. The U.S. State Department has deemed Russian to be a &quot;critical language&quot; and has many programs to encourage students to join this needed area of study.<\/p>\n<p>At 51ÁÔÆæ, language students receive an education in not just language fluency but also in the culture surrounding that language. Context matters in communication, and we believe it is important for students to understand the history, literature, and customs of native speakers of Russian in order to successfully apply their fluency.<\/p>\n<p>Students are also encouraged to participate in 51ÁÔÆæ's\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/cie\/study-abroad\/\" target=\"_blank\">study abroad<\/a>\u00a0program with destinations including Saratov, Moscow, St. Petersburg, and Vladimir. Some students choose just a short immersion while others go abroad for a semester or even a full year. Because of the complexities of planning a study abroad experience, students are encouraged to start planning early in sophomore year. At least 9 of the credits in the minor must come from upper-division courses (300 level and above) completed in residence at 51ÁÔÆæ. The College requires that students attain at least a 2.0 GPA on all credits in the minor attempted at 51ÁÔÆæ. for the minor takes place within the department by a faculty member or staff member. Follow the steps using the &quot;Declare a Minor&quot; button on the department\u2019s website which may include instructions on how to select a faculty advisor if there is more than one to choose from.<\/p> <p>Students who already have an L&amp;S college advisor because their degree plan is in L&amp;S can discuss the minor with them as well since they will be familiar with any minor in L&amp;S. Students who are working on a degree from a 51ÁÔÆæ college other than the College of Letters &amp; Science will not need an L&amp;S college advisor for just a minor and one will not be assigned. These students should work with the faculty or staff advisor they receive as part of the minor declaration process or contact the department directly for assistance.<\/p> <p>Applicants who have not started classes at 51ÁÔÆæ yet who wish to declare a minor should wait until they are registered for their first 51ÁÔÆæ classes and then can declare the minor using the \u201cDeclare a Minor\u201d button on the program\u2019s website.
