ITALIAN 333 Enacts Dante’s Inferno

Students in ITALIAN 333: Dante’s Divine Comedy in Translation act out a circle of Dante’s Inferno on Monday, September 15 at the fountain outside of Curtin Hall. Dante students acted the roles of the Inferno’s hoarders and squanderers, pushing boulders (aka yoga balls) around the fountain and demanding, “Why hoard?” and “Why waste?”. Students held their hands open, to symbolize wasting, or fists closed, to symbolize hoarding. Thanks, Klotsche Center, for lending us the yoga balls!

51�� Authors Recognition Ceremony 2025

Professor Sarah Davies Cordova and Professor Emerita Robin Pickering-Iazzi were among the members of the Department of Global Studies celebrated at the biannual 51�� Authors Recognition Ceremony on March 27, 2025, acknowledging 51�� scholars who have published books since the 2023 ceremony. Here Davies Cordova holds her translation of Sindiwe Magona’s and her edition of Élisabeth Guénard’s , and Pickering-Iazzi holds her translation of Maria Rosa Cutrufelli’s .

Study Abroad Scholarship for Students of Arabic, Italian, and Japanese

The CIE-National Resource Center Title VI Grant offers a limited number of Study Abroad Scholarships in the amount of $1,500-$2,000 for undergraduates (sophomores and above) or graduate students with a demonstrated interest in critical languages as defined by the U.S. Department of Education. Of the languages taught within the Department of Global Studies, this definition includes Arabic, Italian, and Japanese.

Application Deadlines:

Students accepted into a study abroad program for UWinteriM or Spring 2025 semester should apply for this scholarship by October 30, 2024.
Students accepted into a study abroad program for Summer 2025 should apply for this scholarship by February 15, 2025.

Congratulations to 51�� Italian major Daniela Chiappetta, who has been selected by the National Italian American Foundation for the 2024 Ambassador Peter F. Secchia Voyage of Discovery Program. This highly competitive program selects 48 U.S. College students each summer for a two-week, all-expenses paid trip to Italy, focusing on a different region each summer, exploring landmarks ancient and modern, sampling regional cuisine, exploring large cities and small towns, and participating in community service. Applications for all scholarships within the Department of Global Studies are due within the 51�� Panther Scholarship Portal are on Friday, March 1. Please make sure to complete the general application and upload a transcript showing your grades for Fall 2023 to be eligible for all scholarships. In addition, there are program-specific scholarships for Comparative Literature, French, Global Studies, and Italian, some of which require an additional short application. For all scholarships requiring that you be a declared major or minor within a program, there is still time to declare your major or minor and then apply!

Roy Arthur Swanson Merit Scholarship in Comparative Literature: to be eligible, students must be full-time undergraduates, majoring or minoring in Comparative Literature with a 3.5 GPA in Comparative Literature courses.��.

Martha Best/Martine Meyer Scholarship: to be eligible, students must be full-time undergraduates with demonstrated financial need who are enrolled in French coursework; majoring or minoring in French is not required, but preference is given to students intending to be a French teacher.��.

Leah Fetter Merit Scholarship: to be eligible, undergraduate students must be French majors with demonstrated financial need who will be participating in one of 51��’s study abroad or exchange programs in a French-speaking country.��.

Emmaneuelle Leah Fetter Memorial Scholarship: to be eligible, undergraduate students must be French majors, enrolled full-time, with demonstrated financial need.��.

Mariele Schirmer Scholarship in French: to be eligible, undergraduate students must be French majors, enrolled in at last 9 credit.��.

Ian J. Elliott Memorial Scholarship: to be eligible, undergraduate students students must be a Global Studies or International Studies major with a minimum 2.5 GPA who will be studying abroad or completing an overseas internship in summer or fall.��.

Giovanni Carini Memorial Scholarship: to be eligible, students of any major must be accepted into an approved study abroad experience in Italy.��.
