It can restore normal breathing to a person whose breathing has slowed or stopped because of an opioid overdose.&nbsp;Narcan\u00ae is a brand name for generic naloxone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"210\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/wellness\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/657\/2025\/11\/Narcan.jpg\" alt=\"Narcan Nasal Spray\" class=\"wp-image-4611\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-can-i-get-narcan-on-campus\">Can I get Narcan\u00ae on campus?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Yes. Narcan\u00ae boxes are installed in multiple locations on 51ÁÔÆæ campuses. The contents are free and available to anyone who might need, or think they\u2019ll need, this rescue medication for themselves or someone else. Each box contains 1 Narcan\u00ae kit containing 2 doses of Narcan nasal. No one who accesses the Narcan\u00ae boxes is identified. The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dhs.wisconsin.gov\/opioids\/data-reports-studies.htm?fbclid=IwAR1xE5s36_6S529m3BkDbsD71VoxaTomzK9GggAspaJEGZmM9gRhgVhAx_s\">Wisconsin Department of Health Services Opioids Data Dashboards<\/a>&nbsp;show the number of reported suspected opioid overdoses in Wisconsin and Milwaukee County. Fentanyl, a synthetic opioid, is the primary driver in the alarming increase in overdose deaths. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, most recent cases of fentanyl-related overdose are linked to illicitly manufactured fentanyl, which is distributed through illegal drug markets for its heroin-like effect. Fentanyl is being found in all types of drugs including cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine and other drugs. It is being pressed into illicit pills that are made to resemble prescription pills. Many people may be unaware that the substance they are using is mixed with fentanyl. Fentanyl-laced drugs are extremely dangerous \u2013 a tiny amount of fentanyl the size of 2 grains of salt can cause death.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By making Narcan\u00ae nasal spray more accessible, 51ÁÔÆæ enhances campus efforts and contributes to local and state efforts to support healthy communities, reduce harm, and prevent deaths related to opioid and other substance use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-is-narcan-safe\">Is Narcan\u00ae safe?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Yes, Narcan\u00ae is safe to give even if you\u2019re not sure the person has opioids in their system. Some people might experience withdrawal symptoms after receiving Narcan\u00ae, which is unpleasant but not fatal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-do-you-use-narcan-nasal-spray\">How do you use Narcan\u00ae nasal spray?<br><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you think someone is overdosing, immediately call 911 (414-229-9911 on campus). Give Narcan\u00ae according to the instructions on the package. Stay with the person until emergency help arrives.<a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/wellness\/health-promotion\/alcohol-and-other-drugs\/#tab-7qjx-emergencies\">&nbsp;Click here for signs of overdose<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-do-i-need-training-to-give-narcan-nasal-spray\">Do I need training to give Narcan\u00ae nasal spray?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Narcan\u00ae nasal spray is easy to use, and it comes with step-by-step instructions for how to administer. Training on how to give Narcan\u00ae is not required but is available at 51ÁÔÆæ for anyone who is interested. To find a training session, go to the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/police\/safetytraining\/\">51ÁÔÆæ Police Department Training Calendar<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-should-i-give-narcan-if-i-don-t-know-what-the-person-has-used\">Should I give Narcan\u00ae if I don&#8217;t know what the person has used? <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Narcan\u00ae won\u2019t harm someone if they\u2019re overdosing on drugs other than opioids, so it\u2019s best to use it if you think someone is overdosing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-will-narcan-reverse-side-effects-of-any-kind-of-overdose\">Will Narcan\u00ae reverse side effects of any kind of overdose?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>No. Narcan\u00ae can reverse only an overdose from opioids.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-long-until-narcan-works\">How long until Narcan\u00ae works?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>It takes 2-3 minutes for Narcan\u00ae to work. If there is not response after 2-3 minutes, a second dose of Narcan\u00ae should be given. Rescue breathes can be administered in the time waiting for naloxone to take effect (in the case of absent breathing).&nbsp;The 911 dispatcher will talk you through the steps you should take while you wait for emergency responders to arrive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-would-a-person-completely-recover-from-an-overdose-after-receiving-narcan\">Would a person completely recover from an overdose after receiving Narcan\u00ae?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Stronger opioids like fentanyl might require multiple doses of Narcan\u00ae. Also, Narcan\u00ae works in the body for only 30 to 90 minutes, therefore it is possible for a person to still experience the effects of an overdose after Narcan\u00ae wears off. For these reasons it is imperative to call 911 or 414-229-9911 (on campus) at the first sign of overdose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-could-i-get-in-trouble-for-assisting-someone-who-is-overdosing\">Could I get in trouble for assisting someone who is overdosing?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Under the Wisconsin Good Samaritan Law, a person cannot be held civilly liable for a good faith effort to help in a life-threatening situation. State law also provides limited immunity from criminal prosecution for certain amounts of controlled substance possession and the possession of drug paraphernalia for a person who aids someone experiencing an overdose from a controlled substance. Under the 51ÁÔÆæ assistance policy, students who call for help, stay with the person, and cooperate with university officials receive some forgiveness from alcohol or other drug use citations and disciplinary action by the university.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-else-is-uwm-doing-to-address-the-opioid-epidemic\">What else is 51ÁÔÆæ doing to address the opioid epidemic?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>51ÁÔÆæ\u2019s strong foundation of&nbsp;evidence-based&nbsp;prevention and education around alcohol and drug misuse has helped the campus respond to the opioid overdose epidemic.
