This new, two-part approach focuses on how to connect with and refer students in distress to local, regional, and national resources available for them. For more information, visit our <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/wellness\/health-promotion\/emotional-health\/suicide-prevention-training\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Suicide Prevention Training Page<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"uwm-p-card-grid uwm-l-grid uwm-l-grid--equal-y uwm-l-grid--2\">\n<div class=\"uwm-p-card uwm-u-mb-40 uwm-p-card--gold\"><div class=\"uwm-p-card--body\"><div class=\"uwm-p-card--title\">Part One: Online Training<\/div><div class=\"uwm-p-card--content\">UW-System\u2019s Recognize, Respond,\u00a0Refer: Suicide Prevention Training for Faculty and Staff, an\u00a0<em>asynchronous online<\/em>\u00a0training builds awareness, knowledge, and skills about mental health and suicide prevention. The training requires approximately 45 minutes to complete.\u00a0<\/div><a class=\"uwm-p-card--link\" href=\"https:\/\/uws-td.instructure.com\/enroll\/EKHMBB\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Register for the online training<\/a><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"uwm-p-card uwm-u-mb-40 uwm-p-card--gold\"><div class=\"uwm-p-card--body\"><div class=\"uwm-p-card--title\">Part Two: In-Person Discussions<\/div><div class=\"uwm-p-card--content\">This 75-minute\u00a0<em>in-person\u00a0discussion session<\/em>\u00a0builds\u00a0on the foundational online training by focusing on\u00a0skills-based practice, scenario discussions, and campus-specific\u00a0resource\/referral information. Moreover, excessive drinking and drug use are associated with short-term academic problems (e.g., missing class, and less time spent studying) and with degree&nbsp;completion.&nbsp;Reducing substance misuse among students is a worthwhile and viable strategy for improving academic performance and retention. This can have a profound impact on the long-term success of our students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"uwm-p-accordion\" data-accordion-prefix-classes=\"uwm\" data-accordion-cool-selectors=\"1\"><button class=\"uwm-p-accordion--toggle-button size-p-md\">Expand All<\/button>\n<div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--header\">Be Proactive<\/div><div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--panel\"><div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--panel-inner uwm-u-clear\">\n<p>As a faculty or staff member at 51ÁÔÆæ, you are in a position to make a difference because you can positively influence students\u2019 decisions about substance use in a variety of ways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Highlight the connection between&nbsp;academic success and substance use&nbsp;in conversations with students.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hold quizzes, exams, classes, deadlines, and office hours on Fridays to deter students from drinking or using earlier in the week.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Make attendance part of the grade.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Avoid normalizing substance use: avoid jokes or glorified stories about substance use.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Don\u2019t hold classes or meetings in a bar.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Set expectations for your students. Include a statement in your syllabus regarding substance use (e.g. don\u2019t come to class under the influence, no vaping in class).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you plan to be away (e.g. at a conference), invite a guest speaker on alcohol and other drugs, rather than canceling the class.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--header\">Be Responsive<\/div><div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--panel\"><div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--panel-inner uwm-u-clear\">\n<p>You may be in a position to notice potential warning signs of a drinking or drug use problem. You are not expected to diagnose, but you can share your concerns with the student and refer them to campus resources for support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Recognize:<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Recognize potential warning signs of substance use issues. Multiple signs and a pattern of behavior may indicate a serious problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Deterioration in work\/academic performance<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Increased tardiness or absences<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Multiple requests for extensions on assignments<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mood changes such as temper flare-ups, irritability, and defensiveness<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Physical or mental indicators such as memory lapses, lack of personal hygiene, bloodshot eyes, lack of coordination or slurred speech<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Disclosure, by a student, that there might be a drinking or drug problem<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Respond:<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is important not to ignore the signs. You can present your concerns in such a way that they might see things more clearly and get the help they need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Consult, if necessary, to determine whether you are the best person to approach the student and discuss a plan. A supervisor, department chair, the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/wellness\/directory\/jarczynski-crysta\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Campus AOD Coordinator<\/a>&nbsp;or&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/wellness\/counseling\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Counseling Services<\/a>&nbsp;are options.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ask the student for permission to share a concern with them.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Describe in a specific and non-judgmental way, the behavior\/signs that concern you. Frame your thoughts from a place of concern, and with the best interest of the student\u2019s well-being and academic success in mind.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Invite the student to respond to your concerns by asking what they think.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Refer:<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Have a few resources for the student to choose from, in case they\u2019re ready to get help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Make a referral to campus resources for Students located at the top of the page.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Express and respect the student\u2019s autonomy and right to decide.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Follow-up to see how things are going for the student and whether the referral was helpful.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>For additional information on Alcohol and Other Drugs support for students, <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/wellness\/health-promotion\/alcohol-and-other-drugs\/\">visit our AOD page<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sexual and Relationship Violence Prevention: How Faculty\/Staff Can Help&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Sexual and relationship violence is a pervasive part of our society and it is not uncommon for 51ÁÔÆæ students to be impacted by it. As a faculty\/staff member, you can help by learning about the resources available to support students, how to respond to students who disclose to you, and about simple ways you can help intervene when you witness situations involving sexual or relationship violence.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Responding to Disclosures&nbsp;<br><\/strong>Faculty and staff should be familiar with their responsibilities when a student discloses sexual or relationship violence. Prevent Sexual and Relationship Violence bystander intervention training<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Mandatory Training&nbsp;<br><\/strong>51ÁÔÆæ and the Universities of Wisconsin have prioritized sexual harassment and sexual violence prevention and currently require all new students and employees to complete training on these topics. These online trainings provide information about 51ÁÔÆæ policies and expectations that are based on state and federal laws. They facilitate learning and reflection on these issues, which contributes to a safer and supportive 51ÁÔÆæ community for all our members. If there is a need to fill medications from an outside provider, or if we do not carry the medication the student needs, prescriptions can be sent to local pharmacies.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--header\">Is the Student Health and Wellness Center accredited? <\/div><div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--panel\"><div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--panel-inner uwm-u-clear\">\n<p>Yes. 51ÁÔÆæ Student Health and Wellness Center is accredited through the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC).
