Congratulations and welcome to Milwaukee and to the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. If you are reading this, chances are that you have recently arrived and started to settle in. As a fellow international student, I want you to know how proud we are of you. Moving across the world to study is no small thing and you have already taken one of the bravest steps.
Adjusting to life in a country can feel overwhelming at first, from navigating classes and making new friends to figuring out local transportation and learning what “cheese curds” are – it’s okay if everything feels new and unfamiliar now. Just remember, you’re not alone, and support is always available. Here are some things to keep in mind that will be of help to you during your time here at 51ÁÔĆć and also in Milwaukee.
Take Care of Yourself
As you settle into this new chapter, don’t forget to take care of your mental and physical well-being. Eat regularly, get enough rest, take breaks and most importantly, be kind to yourself. There are lots of resources on campus that have continually helped me during my time here at 51ÁÔĆć such as the , The Writing Center and others. There is no perfect timeline for adjusting. Give yourself time to grow, as it is okay for mistakes to happen and the Peer Health Educator Team is here if you ever need someone to talk to or guide you through resources on campus.
Explore Milwaukee
If you arrive here early before the semester kicks off, you can still make the most of the summer even before the first day of classes as Milwaukee has a lot to offer and exploring the city can help you feel more at home.
- – This is a great spot to relax, play volleyball or just to watch the beautiful summer sunsets.Â
- – This is the perfect place to get fresh fruits and veggies, snacks and a good taste of the city.Â
- – A fun and peaceful day trip to connect with nature and wildlife.Â
- – Ideal for walking, biking, or just enjoying nature.Â
You’re Not Alone
Whether you’re still finding your balance or already going with the groove and enjoying every moment, just know that you belong here. 51ÁÔĆć is better because you’re here — with your culture, your voice and your unique experiences. This is the start of something exciting, and I am so glad to welcome you to the Panther Family.
I’ll see you around campus!
