As the days get longer, my time at 51 gets shorter. The realization slowly kicks in that I’ll be leaving a campus that’s been home for the past three years. Leaving friendships that I’ve built, connections that I formed, and maybe a few projects left unfinished. There are some feelings of uncertainty and fear of the unknown. What job am I going to have once I’m done and how quickly am I going to get that job? Am I going to go to grad school, if so, where? How is that school going to be different from 51? Where am I going to live? Will I even stay in Wisconsin? It’s a lot of unknowns when I like living in a “I need to know” world. But sometimes, that’s where the best adventures lie. From my favorite poet, Bilbo Baggins:
Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
and though I often have passed them by,
A Day will come at last when I
Shall take the hidden paths that run
West of the Moon, East of the Sun
It’s talking about the unknown paths and walkways we might not be accustomed to, or the adventure that’s waiting to happen. The uncertainty of things and how, even though it might be scary, lies the best tales and fun you might have. Three years ago, I left home to go on this adventure to get my bachelor’s degree. Fear of failure was running through my mind and veins and the fear of the unknown. It’s time to go on that adventure again, my friend. The road is scary, sometimes unforgiving, but It’s about the fun and things we will learn along the way. It’s time to go on another adventure.
If you are facing the same feeling, it’s ok. Sometimes life takes us on a different path than we originally thought, and uncertain feelings can be hard to navigate. Take a moment and think about what you are possibly afraid of, worried about, or just general concerns. For me, I will write down what is causing stress, like moving to a new state or selecting a school, this helps to clear my mind a bit, and I can start answering some concerns I have AND it starts to make me feel a bit better about the choices I’ve made or need to make.
Reminder, this journey of life is meant to be fun, so please:
- Be kind to yourself. You are on your OWN path of life, no one else. Don’t compare.
- Take those mindful breaks. You achieve nothing with burnout.
- Get your sleep. Sleep allows your brain to reset and clean itself.
- Ask for help. There is nothing wrong in reaching out for a helping hand when you need it.
- Drink your water. Take care of your body; you only get one.
