This year’s keynote speaker is Bench Ansfield (Assistant Professor of History, Temple University and an urban historian of racial capitalism), author of  (W. W. Norton, 2025).

This year’s event also includes a juried senior capstone and graduate student poster session following a buffet lunch, a USP alumni panel where students can hear from and connect with practitioners working in Milwaukee across a variety of fields in the public and private sector, an awards ceremony, and a reception following the keynote presentation.

Nourishing Places: Community Gardens as a Model For Neighborhood Engagement & Revitalization.

Join us for the 27th Annual Student Research Forum, a collaborative event bringing together community members, university scholars, students, and city officials to discuss community engagement, neighborhood collaboration, and urban development and policy change. As part of this year’s Student Research Forum, there will be a juried poster session showcasing senior capstone, service learning, and graduate student projects that examine critical issues facing Milwaukee, a panel discussion that will explore the significance of community engagement and neighborhood collaboration centered around community garden spaces in Milwaukee, and an awards ceremony and reception.

Join us for the Urban Forum, a collaborative event bringing together community members, university scholars, students, and city officials to discuss crucial topics impacting Milwaukee. As part of the Urban Forum, there will be a poster session showcasing senior capstone and graduate student projects that examine critical issues facing Milwaukee. Through a pop-up exhibit, panel discussion, and student poster session, we will delve into the significance of community voices and how they can shape our city’s future.

The 2023 Student Research Forum keynote speaker is Claire Dunning, assistant professor of public policy and history at the University of Maryland, College Park, and author of Nonprofit Neighborhoods: An Urban History of Inequality and the American State (University of Chicago Press, 2022).

In addition to the keynote presentation, the afternoon’s event includes:

  • a juried poster session for undergraduate and graduate students over a buffet lunch,
  • a panel discussion on community collaborations and conducting urban research by members of the Cherry Street Community Garden project,
  • a documentary screening by racial justice community project grant awardee and USP MS student, Nateya Taylor, an awards ceremony, and
  • a reception following the keynote presentation.
