Tuition for out-of-state students varies, but for many students in the Midwest, going to 51ÁÔÆæ won&#8217;t cost much more than going to school in their home state. A breakdown of tuition rates is available <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/cost-aid\/\">here<\/a>. Keep in mind that students from Illinois and Minnesota are eligible for an additional $1,000 discount through the Milwaukee Advantage Program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course, tuition isn&#8217;t the only cost. There&#8217;s books, meals and housing. Overall, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bestplaces.net\/cost_of_living\/city\/wisconsin\/milwaukee#:~:text=Cost%20of%20Living%20in%20Milwaukee%2C%20Wisconsin&amp;text=An%20amount%20below%20100%20means,Milwaukee%2C%20Wisconsin%20is%20more%20expensive.\">the cost of living in Milwaukee is less than the national average<\/a>. The city&#8217;s housing is particularly affordable, and many students opt to share apartments in the historic neighborhood surrounding 51ÁÔÆæ&#8217;s campus in Milwaukee after their freshman year. In general, you can estimate the cost of housing at $6,379 and budget $4,190 for meals. For more information on estimated costs, see the <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/onestop\/finances\/cost-of-attendance\/\">estimated cost of attendance from our Bursar&#8217;s Office<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--header\">Can I afford it?<\/div><div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--panel\"><div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--panel-inner uwm-u-clear\">\n<p>The answer to this question will be different for each family based on their resources. But here are a few things to consider: 75% of 51ÁÔÆæ students receive financial aid, with an average award of $9,496 last year. You&#8217;ll want to <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/onestop\/finances\/receiving-financial-aid\/#apply\">get familiar with the financial aid <\/a><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/onestop\/finances\/receiving-financial-aid\/#apply\" target=\"_blank\">process<\/a> and make sure your student fills out the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/studentaid.gov\/h\/apply-for-aid\/fafsa\" target=\"_blank\">Free Application for Federal Student Aid&nbsp;(FAFSA)<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Financial aid is usually a combination of loans and need-based grants, but 51ÁÔÆæ also has <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/uwm.academicworks.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">scholarships available<\/a>. Last school year, the university awarded $20.4 million in scholarships to 5,639 students. For Fall 2021, we&#8217;ve introduced Chancellor&#8217;s Merit Scholarships, which are based on unweighted GPA, provide up to $1,500 per year and are renewable for four years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most of our students also work while in school. 51ÁÔÆæ hires about 3,000 student workers each year and many more students find jobs off campus. We are particularly proud of our internship, co-op and other field placements, as in many cases, these lead to full-time jobs before or after graduation.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--header\">Will my child get a job after graduation?<\/div><div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--panel\"><div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--panel-inner uwm-u-clear\">\n<p>Yes. Our recent graduation survey shows that most 51ÁÔÆæ students <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/careerplan\/about\/uwm-graduate-data\/\" target=\"_blank\">have a job lined up or are working before graduation<\/a>. The average starting salary is $48,288, and it can be significantly higher in STEM fields.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For most students, 51ÁÔÆæ plays a key role in finding and obtaining their first job. More than 2,800 companies recruit at 51ÁÔÆæ each year for internships and permanent jobs. In many cases, 51ÁÔÆæ students&#8217; first jobs start as internships, and companies offer them permanent positions upon graduation. See a list of companies that employ our graduates on the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/careerplan\/about\/uwm-graduate-data\/\" target=\"_blank\">Career Planning and Resource Center website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--header\">Will my child be happy at 51ÁÔÆæ?<\/div><div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--panel\"><div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--panel-inner uwm-u-clear\">\n<p>We hope so! Many students choose 51ÁÔÆæ because it has &#8220;the best of both worlds.&#8221; It&#8217;s a large university with many course offerings in a major city with restaurants, arts organizations and sports teams. At the same time, 51ÁÔÆæ&#8217;s compact campus fosters a tight-knit community in which students make close friendships. We encourage students to take advantage of campus facilities, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/urec\/\">University Recreation<\/a>, which offers fitness classes and intramural sports. Its popular <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/urec\/programs\/outdoor-pursuits\/\">Outdoor Pursuits<\/a> program organizes rock climbing, snowshoeing, camping and other excursions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/studentinvolvement\/\">Student Involvement<\/a> includes hundreds of student organizations, <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/studentinvolvement\/leadership\/\">leadership programs<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/studentinvolvement\/arts-and-entertainment\/campus-activities-board-cab\/\">Campus Activities Board<\/a>. Or, your student may choose a <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/housing\/communities\/living-learning-communities\/\">Living Learning Community<\/a>, where students sharing similar interests live and take classes together. Other students find purpose in <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/our\/\">undergraduate research<\/a>, working side by side with faculty members to solve scientific and societal problems, or volunteering in the community through 51ÁÔÆæ&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/community\/\">Center for Community-Based Learning, Leadership, and Research<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Going to college can bring new challenges, as well as opportunities. Your student will have support at 51ÁÔÆæ from <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/advising\/\">skilled advisors<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/studentsuccess\/peer-mentors\/\">peer mentors<\/a>, and access to <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/studentsuccess\/tutoring-and-supplemental-instruction\/\">free tutoring<\/a>. Coaches from 51ÁÔÆæ&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/diversity-equity-inclusion\/people-category\/multicultural-student-centers\/\">Multicultural Student Centers<\/a> are available to all students, offering culturally sensitive guidance and support throughout their academic journey, from navigating financial aid to planning for careers.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--header\">Will my child be safe in Milwaukee?<\/div><div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--panel\"><div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--panel-inner uwm-u-clear\">\n<p>51ÁÔÆæ is located in one of Milwaukee&#8217;s safest neighborhoods, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitmilwaukee.org\/neighborhoods\/east-side\/\">upper east side<\/a>. Nonetheless, we take campus safety seriously. The university has its own police department with more than 35 officers working 24 hours a day, seven days a week. They patrol the campus on foot, bicycle and car, and provide services that include <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/police\/safety-training-information\/self-defense-training-information\/\">self-defense training<\/a>, jump-starts and help for those locked out of vehicles, and various community policing programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Students are automatically signed up for email safety alerts sent by the 51ÁÔÆæ Police Department, and they can get text messages regarding emergencies and potential threats if they provide a cellphone number.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Students walking at night can get safety escorts to locations within a few blocks of campus, and those going farther can get free rides from <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/boss\/\">Be On The Safe Side (B.O.S.S.)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--header\">What if my child gets sick?<\/div><div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--panel\"><div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--panel-inner uwm-u-clear\">\n<p>Don&#8217;t worry. <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/wellness\/\">The Student Health and Wellness Center<\/a> is open year-round and provides a wide array of medical services. <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/wellness\/counseling\/\">University Counseling Services<\/a> provides mental health care, and wellness events are held regularly on campus.
