Who Needs A Heart is a parable of political becoming and subjective transformation and remains BAFC’s most controversial film. Akin to a sophisticated home-movie history, a record of life on the fringes in London between 1965 and 1975, the film explores the forgotten history of British Black Power through the fictional lives of a group of friends caught up in the metamorphoses of the movement’s central figure; the counter-cultural anti-hero, activist and charismatic social bandit Michael Abdul Malik . Formerly known as Michael X and christened Michael De Freitas , he left England in 1970 and was tried and executed for his role in an unsolved murder in Trinidad in 1975. The film nevertheless holds him at a distance, tracing his career through contemporary TV and radio bulletins which counterpoint and parallel the lives of the group.

Special Event | Free For Everyone!

A Showcase of four short films about American writer James Baldwin, wherein he muses about race, sexuality and civil rights, among other topics, across Istanbul, Paris and Great Britain.
James Baldwin: the brilliant thinker, writer, and activist whose prescient essays, plays, and novels continue to shine a searing light on American racism 35 years after his death. Born in 1924, in Harlem, Baldwin spent much of his life abroad, and in these three short films — made in Istanbul, Paris, and London (with Dick Gregory) — he can be charming, candid, churlish, witty, and acerbic. Whether ruminating on his own “American-ness,” his experience as a child-minister, Black Power, or the nature of love and sexuality, creativity, freedom, and survival — his unsparing opinions are never less than eye-opening, and his onscreen presence never less than riveting. All three films included in this program have been recently restored.

Join the Women’s Resource Center for an evening of creativity, connection, and care at Tea Blending in the Art Gallery. Set among beautiful works of art, this hands-on workshop invites participants to slow down, sip intentionally, and learn the art of crafting their own custom tea blends.  We are honored to welcome Lizz from Tootsie’s Tea, who will guide us through the tea blending process- sharing her expertise, stories, and passion for mindful tea-making. Participants will explore a variety of herbs, teas, and botanicals while creating a personalized blend to take home.

This event is held in support of victims and survivors of sexual violence, with space intentionally designed to be welcoming, gentle, and affirming. Whether you come for the tea, the art, or the community, all are invited to gather in solidarity and support.

This Earth Day, join the Women’s Resource Center for Radicalize, Reclaim, and Recycle, an afternoon where activism meets sustainability through creative expression and community connection. Together, we’ll explore how feminism, environmental justice, and sustainability intersect as we transform everyday “waste” into art that reflects resistance, empowerment, and care for our planet.

What is in store:

  • Sustainable Vendor Fair: Come shop at our mini vendor fair highlighting upcycle and sustainable Milwaukee vendors! Fast fashion and excessive packaging create massive amounts of waste! We’re inviting local artists whose products are made from eco-friendly, recycled and/or up-cycled materials to sell their merchandise to promote responsible consumption and support businesses that have a minimal impact on the environment.
  • Clothing mending: If you have clothing items “ruined” by stains or holes, we want to teach you how to fix them up instead of throwing them out, don’t toss it lets fix them! The WRC will provide sewing machines, needles, thread, and spare fabric patches to make your clothes as good as new!
  • Junk Journaling: Tap into your creative spirit with junk journaling—an art form that gives new life to discarded materials. We’ll provide the supplies you need to create a personalized journal using recycled paper, old magazines, fabric scraps, and more.  Feel free to bring your own “junk”, think magazine cutouts, old receipts, and even those stray stickers you never knew what to do with—turn them into visual statements of power!
  • A radical future: This event isn’t just about creating art or swapping clothes. Join us in discussions on how feminism, sustainability, and environmental justice are interconnected. How can feminism contribute to sustainable futures? How can we use our collective power to shift away from waste and consumption?

Throughout the afternoon, we’ll also hold space for conversation about how feminist values can help shape more sustainable futures. By reclaiming materials, sharing resources, and creating art together, we can imagine new ways to resist wasteful systems and build communities rooted in care, creativity, and collective action. Come craft, swap, and connect as we radicalize the future, reclaim our power, and recycle with purpose.
