Countours of Becoming brings together the work of Caroline Calvano and Keelie Murphy-Besaw, two Milwaukee-based artists whose practices center the body as a site of labor, adornment, and self-definition. Working primarily in metal sculpture, Calvano engages material processes that demand physical strength and endurance. Her work explores adornment and the feminine body not as passive objects of decoration, but as sites shaped by labor–where effort, weight, and time become inseparable from value. Rooted in a commitment to care, consent, and accessibility, Murphy-Besaw’s practice reimagines tattooing as a space of trust and affirmation, particularly for those who have felt marginalized or unheard in traditional tattoo enviroments. Together these artists consider adornment as an act of agency. Whether forged in metal or inked into skin, their works insist that decoration is never superficial–it carries out stories of labor, identity, and choice. This exhibition invites viewers to reflect on how bodies are shaped, marked, and valued, and how making can become a means of reclaiming space, power, and visibility.

One of the myths surrounding the creation of Vietnam involves a fight between two dragons whose intertwined bodies fell into the South China Sea and formed Vietnam’s curving S-shaped coastline. Influential feminist theorist and filmmaker Trinh T. Minh-ha’s lyrical film essay commemorating the 40th anniversary of the end of the war draws inspiration from ancient legend and from water as a force evoked in every aspect of Vietnamese culture. Minh-ha’s classic Surname Viet Given Name Nam (1989) used no original footage shot in the country; in Forgetting Vietnam images of contemporary life unfold as a dialogue between land and water—the elements that form the term “country”. Fragments of text and song evoke the echoes and traces of a trauma of international proportions. The encounter between the ancient as related to the solid earth, and the new as related to the liquid changes in a time of rapid globalization, creates a third space of historical and cultural re-memory—what local inhabitants, immigrants and veterans remember of yesterday’s stories to comment on today’s events.

In October 1985 Britain witnessed a spate of civil disturbances in the Birmingham district of Handsworth and in urban centres of London. These were violent, tragic events, marked by the death of an elderly black woman, Joy Gardner and a white policeman, Keith Blakelock . Handsworth Songs takes as its point of departure these events and the inability of the British media to go beyond its concern with demonising or rationalising the rioters and their motives, to break the anxiety-driven loop of morbid responses to the presence of black people in Britain.

Who Needs A Heart is a parable of political becoming and subjective transformation and remains BAFC’s most controversial film. Akin to a sophisticated home-movie history, a record of life on the fringes in London between 1965 and 1975, the film explores the forgotten history of British Black Power through the fictional lives of a group of friends caught up in the metamorphoses of the movement’s central figure; the counter-cultural anti-hero, activist and charismatic social bandit Michael Abdul Malik . Formerly known as Michael X and christened Michael De Freitas , he left England in 1970 and was tried and executed for his role in an unsolved murder in Trinidad in 1975. The film nevertheless holds him at a distance, tracing his career through contemporary TV and radio bulletins which counterpoint and parallel the lives of the group.
