Influential feminist theorist and filmmaker Trinh T. Minh-ha’s lyrical film essay commemorating the 40th anniversary of the end of the war draws inspiration from ancient legend and from water as a force evoked in every aspect of Vietnamese culture. Minh-ha’s classic Surname Viet Given Name Nam (1989) used no original footage shot in the country; in Forgetting Vietnam images of contemporary life unfold as a dialogue between land and water—the elements that form the term “country”. Fragments of text and song evoke the echoes and traces of a trauma of international proportions. The encounter between the ancient as related to the solid earth\, and the new as related to the liquid changes in a time of rapid globalization\, creates a third space of historical and cultural re-memory—what local inhabitants\, immigrants and veterans remember of yesterday’s stories to comment on today’s events. \n  \n  URL:/studentaffairs/event/forgetting-vietnam/ LOCATION:51 Student Union (UN)\, 2200 East 51.\, Milwaukee\, WI\, 53211\, United States CATEGORIES:Arts and Culture,Connect,Film/Screening,Public,Students ATTACH;FMTTYPE=image/jpeg:/studentaffairs/wp-content/uploads/sites/184/2026/04/vietnam.jpeg ORGANIZER;CN="Union Cinema":MAILTO:cinema@uwm.edu X-TRIBE-STATUS: END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;TZID=America/Chicago:20260507T190000 DTEND;TZID=America/Chicago:20260507T210000 DTSTAMP:20260418T011125 CREATED:20260409T195220Z LAST-MODIFIED:20260415T172648Z UID:10004405-1778180400-1778187600@uwm.edu SUMMARY:Special Event: Blue House DESCRIPTION:Blue House Film Screening is a D.I.Y. film organization showcasing short films and building cinematic connections in Milwaukee.\n\nJoin us at the Union Cinema for a shorts program curated by the members of the Blue House collective! Akin to a sophisticated home-movie history\, a record of life on the fringes in London between 1965 and 1975\, the film explores the forgotten history of British Black Power through the fictional lives of a group of friends caught up in the metamorphoses of the movement’s central figure; the counter-cultural anti-hero\, activist and charismatic social bandit Michael Abdul Malik . Formerly known as Michael X and christened Michael De Freitas \, he left England in 1970 and was tried and executed for his role in an unsolved murder in Trinidad in 1975.
