Together\, we’ll explore how feminism\, environmental justice\, and sustainability intersect as we transform everyday “waste” into art that reflects resistance\, empowerment\, and care for our planet. \nWhat is in store:  \n\nSustainable Vendor Fair: Come shop at our mini vendor fair highlighting upcycle and sustainable Milwaukee vendors! Fast fashion and excessive packaging create massive amounts of waste! We’re inviting local artists whose products are made from eco-friendly\, recycled and/or up-cycled materials to sell their merchandise to promote responsible consumption and support businesses that have a minimal impact on the environment.\n\n\nClothing mending: If you have clothing items “ruined” by stains or holes\, we want to teach you how to fix them up instead of throwing them out\, don’t toss it lets fix them! The WRC will provide sewing machines\, needles\, thread\, and spare fabric patches to make your clothes as good as new! \n\n\nJunk Journaling: Tap into your creative spirit with junk journaling—an art form that gives new life to discarded materials. We’ll provide the supplies you need to create a personalized journal using recycled paper\, old magazines\, fabric scraps\, and more.  Feel free to bring your own “junk”\, think magazine cutouts\, old receipts\, and even those stray stickers you never knew what to do with—turn them into visual statements of power!\n\n\nA radical future: This event isn’t just about creating art or swapping clothes. Join us in discussions on how feminism\, sustainability\, and environmental justice are interconnected. How can feminism contribute to sustainable futures? How can we use our collective power to shift away from waste and consumption?\n\nThroughout the afternoon\, we’ll also hold space for conversation about how feminist values can help shape more sustainable futures. By reclaiming materials\, sharing resources\, and creating art together\, we can imagine new ways to resist wasteful systems and build communities rooted in care\, creativity\, and collective action. Come craft\, swap\, and connect as we radicalize the future\, reclaim our power\, and recycle with purpose. It’s a gritty dive into the inner workings of a city’s infrastructure that embraces different formats\, weaving newly digitized archival material together with surveillance footage and contemporary vignettes of people at work\, communities in flux\, and waste in motion. Observational and off-beat\, the film finds harmonies and dissonance in patterns of creation\, consumption\, and renewal. \n(Melissa Langer\, USA\, 2025\, English\, 70 min\, DCP) URL:/studentaffairs/event/in-excess/ LOCATION:51 Student Union (UN)\, 2200 East 51.\, Milwaukee\, WI\, 53211\, United States CATEGORIES:Arts and Culture,Connect,Film/Screening,Prepare,Public,Students,Thrive ATTACH;FMTTYPE=image/jpeg:/studentaffairs/wp-content/uploads/sites/184/2026/03/Excess.jpeg ORGANIZER;CN="51 Student Union":MAILTO:icenter@uwm.edu X-TRIBE-STATUS: END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;TZID=America/Chicago:20260423T093000 DTEND;TZID=America/Chicago:20260423T103000 DTSTAMP:20260414T194020 CREATED:20260126T172722Z LAST-MODIFIED:20260227T014459Z UID:10003961-1776936600-1776940200@uwm.edu SUMMARY:Student Parent Coffee Hour DESCRIPTION:Connect with fellow student parents and discover campus resources designed to support those with caregiving responsibilities. Working primarily in metal sculpture\, Calvano engages material processes that demand physical strength and endurance. Her work explores adornment and the feminine body not as passive objects of decoration\, but as sites shaped by labor–where effort\, weight\, and time become inseparable from value. Rooted in a commitment to care\, consent\, and accessibility\, Murphy-Besaw’s practice reimagines tattooing as a space of trust and affirmation\, particularly for those who have felt marginalized or unheard in traditional tattoo enviroments. Together these artists consider adornment as an act of agency. Whether forged in metal or inked into skin\, their works insist that decoration is never superficial–it carries out stories of labor\, identity\, and choice. This exhibition invites viewers to reflect on how bodies are shaped\, marked\, and valued\, and how making can become a means of reclaiming space\, power\, and visibility. Influential feminist theorist and filmmaker Trinh T. Minh-ha’s lyrical film essay commemorating the 40th anniversary of the end of the war draws inspiration from ancient legend and from water as a force evoked in every aspect of Vietnamese culture. Minh-ha’s classic Surname Viet Given Name Nam (1989) used no original footage shot in the country; in Forgetting Vietnam images of contemporary life unfold as a dialogue between land and water—the elements that form the term “country”. Fragments of text and song evoke the echoes and traces of a trauma of international proportions. The encounter between the ancient as related to the solid earth\, and the new as related to the liquid changes in a time of rapid globalization\, creates a third space of historical and cultural re-memory—what local inhabitants\, immigrants and veterans remember of yesterday’s stories to comment on today’s events. \n  \n  URL:/studentaffairs/event/forgetting-vietnam/ LOCATION:51 Student Union (UN)\, 2200 East 51.\, Milwaukee\, WI\, 53211\, United States CATEGORIES:Arts and Culture,Connect,Film/Screening,Public,Students ATTACH;FMTTYPE=image/jpeg:/studentaffairs/wp-content/uploads/sites/184/2026/04/vietnam.jpeg ORGANIZER;CN="Union Cinema":MAILTO:cinema@uwm.edu X-TRIBE-STATUS: END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;TZID=America/Chicago:20260507T110000 DTEND;TZID=America/Chicago:20260507T130000 DTSTAMP:20260414T194020 CREATED:20260409T200539Z LAST-MODIFIED:20260409T200539Z UID:10004401-1778151600-1778158800@uwm.edu SUMMARY:Self-Care Celebration DESCRIPTION:End your year with a celebration of self-care!
