TRIO Student Support Services (SSS) at UW-Milwaukee is a federally funded program that helps first-generation, low-income and disabled students succeed with academic coaching, career guidance and financial aid support. Through this support, we ensure equal access to opportunities through tutoring referrals, leadership programs, free laptop loans, a study lounge, and grant aid, providing the resources needed to graduate and build a successful future.
We are supported by the U.S. Department of Education TRIO Grant to serve 250 participant students each year with $379,116 in annual grant funding between 2025-2030. Our five-year TRIO SSS grant award total is $1.895 million
We offer academic tutoring in subjects like reading, writing, math, science, study skills, and more to help you succeed in your classes. You’ll also get personalized guidance when choosing college courses and exploring your options after high school.
We’ll help you understand the full range of financial aid opportunities available—including grants, scholarships, and benefits—and support you in completing your applications. Our team also provides resources to boost your financial literacy and can assist with applying to graduate or professional programs. If you’re starting at a two-year college, we’ll help you plan your transfer to a four-year school and apply for financial aid there too.

SSS has given me an extra support system. As a first-generation college student, I really wasn’t sure what to expect at 51ÁÔÆæ, but everyone in the office was so helpful in guiding me to success in everything from financial aid to housing questions to choosing classes and more. I was also given work opportunities through the office which helped greatly in my resume building. I am so glad I was a part of this program!

With the help of SSS, I was able to navigate through college more efficiently and smoothly with their monthly meetings, the ability to talk to the advisors about anything personal or school related. They support your growth and success in many ways like helping with your class schedule or advising you on what classes to take. We can’t forget the free printing and computer usage that helped me when I didn’t have one so I’m appreciative of what they’ve done for me.

I never thought that I would be able to make it to college, and when the acceptance letters started to roll in, I started to see my future unfold in front of me. …The transition process was a little tough for me but with the support of SSS I was lent the guidance needed to fully realize the student and the man that I could become. …SSS was the foundation that I needed to self-actualize and create the future that I needed.
