Sociology’s Associate Prof. Cary Costello has been nominated for the 2021 Dr. PB Poorman Award for Outstanding Achievement on behalf of LGBTQ+People.

Together with a team of 51ÁÔÆæ students, Associate Professors Celeste Campos-Castillo and Linnea Laestadius are going to start a youth advisory board to 1) gather their input on developing research projects studying the impact of artificial intelligence (e.g., chat bots, machine learning on social media data) on adolescent mental wellbeing; and 2) provide them with professional development opportunities to pique their interest in the sciences. They will be recruiting youth advisors from communities of color here in Milwaukee.
“Everyone has a tendency to avoid dealing with difficult issues, and in the U.S., a favored tactic for avoidance is staying busy. It is socially lauded for us to work long hours, leaving us limited time for personal lives that we jam-pack, then rush through chores and fall into bed exhausted. Suddenly the pandemic lockdown interrupted this for the majority.”
