Older LGBTQ+ adults are twice as likely to have experienced discrimination as their straight peers, according to the National Council on Aging, and with this in mind, 51ÁÔÆæ\u2019s Student Gerontology Association<\/a> set out to consider the intersection of these identities in an event exploring and celebrating the older adult LGBTQ+ community on Oct.15.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Janice Toy, James Simmons, and Bethea \u2013 three \u201celders\u201d in Milwaukee\u2019s Black LGBTQ+ community, as House of History MKE<\/a> Director Dr. Brice Smith, who spoke at the event, refers to them \u2013 joined in a panel discussion led by 51ÁÔÆæ LGBTQ+ Resource Center <\/a>Director Dr. Ariana Myers highlighting their experiences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beyond discrimination, public health crises like the HIV\/AIDS epidemic and COVID-19 pandemic mark the lives of the older adult LGBTQ+ community. <\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Simmons noted that locating and making use of local resources is hard enough as an older adult, but factoring in an LGTBQ+ identity can make the process doubly difficult.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhen you get older, you\u2019re not able to get up and get out there and get in line for resources that\u2019s provided publicly. You kind of get looked over,\u201d he explained. \u201cA lot of times, the gays, they don\u2019t even go after [publicly available resources] because they don\u2019t want to go out and get in these lines. And, depending upon how they present themselves and who they are \u2026 when they get there, people look at them and they don\u2019t fit in societally. Sometimes they\u2019re ostracized and ridiculed, so, a lot of times, they just get turned off by the whole seeking for help experience.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beyond discrimination, public health crises like the HIV\/AIDS epidemic and COVID-19 pandemic mark the lives of the older adult LGBTQ+ community. Bethea explained that over time, more educational information has become available about protecting oneself during such epidemiological events. However, the responsibility falls on the individual to act on that information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe education is available, but if you don\u2019t use the education, it\u2019s useless,\u201d he said. \u201cIt is more available for our younger people today, but I don\u2019t believe that they are as serious about it as they should be.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A memory quilt created in a collaboration between 51ÁÔÆæ, MIAD, House of History MKE, and Diverse & Resilient was on display at the 51ÁÔÆæ Student Gerontology Association\u2019s Oct. 15 event exploring and celebrating the older adult LGBTQ+ community. The quilt was constructed on Sept. 13 as part of a program highlighting intergenerational communication in a retrospective conversation about the COVID-19 pandemic and HIV\/AIDS epidemic.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Resilient LGBTQ+ community<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Though such crises struck the LGBTQ+ community particularly hard, Toy said they found ways to rise up and support one another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou had to be resourceful,\u201d Toy explained. \u201cBeing in this community\u2026we always found ways to beat the odds. We found loopholes and doors to open.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The hardships endured during both the HIV\/AIDS epidemic and COVID-19 pandemic were further illuminated during the event with the display of a memory quilt created in a collaboration between 51ÁÔÆæ, MIAD, House of History MKE, and Diverse & Resilient \u2013 a nonprofit organization working to improve the safety of and achieve health equity for the queer community. The quilt was constructed on Sept. 13 as part of a program highlighting intergenerational communication in a retrospective conversation about the public health crises.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite the resiliency of older adults in the LGBTQ+ community, there\u2019s still a long way to go before society fully fills the gap in resources, representation, support, and acceptance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cA lot of these different community organizations\u2026turn a deaf ear to it and they feel like if it\u2019s not in their little circle, then it doesn\u2019t affect them,\u201d Simmons said. \u201cBut, if it affects one person, it effects everybody.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
