Susan Rose, PhD

Dr. Susan Rose was a member of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee faculty from 1992-2021. Her teaching responsibilities included the areas of mental health and advanced practice. Dr. Rose received her doctorate from the University of Illinois at Chicago and has extensive clinical experience in community mental health and family-based service-delivery systems in child welfare.
Dr. Rose's research interests include intervention with incarcerated women, specifically women in jails with health, mental health, and substance use problems. Some recent studies (conducted with Dr. Tom LeBel) include testing an intensive intervention for women incarcerated in the Milwaukee County House of Correction (Improving the Transition from Jail to the Community for Impoverished Women), and examining the substance abuse, child welfare, and health care service needs of mothers and pregnant women in jail as they transition back into the community听(Keeping Families Together,听funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention). She was the co-principal investigator with Dr. Audrey Begun on the听Supporting Jails in Providing Drug Abuse Services for Women听project, conducted in Milwaukee-area jails, and co-investigator on the听Heart to Heart听study with Dr. Laura Otto-Salaj.
In collaboration with Dr. Steven L. McMurtry, she co-directed the听Title IV-E听Child Welfare Training Program, providing master鈥檚 and bachelor鈥檚 level education to students interested in careers in public child welfare practice. She was also the director of the听Training for Adoption Competency听program,听funded by Jockey International, offering an in depth training program (developed by the Center for Adoption Support & Education; C.A.S.E.) for clinicians seeking to enhance their skills in working with all partners in the adoption process. At the end of 2020, this program had trained more than 150 clinicians in five different locations in Wisconsin.
Dr. Rose served as the chair of the school鈥檚 International Studies Committee and coordinated the Social Work Department鈥檚 adjunct faculty program.
