This course addresses the inconsistencies in special education referrals, qualifications and provision of services for students of color. It is designed to help you think about how your personal and professional biases, including the perception of student (dis)abilities, impact your decision-making; the degree to which current educational practices increase educational inequities for multi-marginalized students with disabilities and all students with disabilities; and solutions for more culturally responsive and overall equitable educational practices for these students.
Benefits and Learning Outcomes
- Discuss why the underrepresentation of students of color who truly need special services and the overrepresentation of students of color with perceived behavior issues in special education are equally as damaging.
- Gain insights from the panel participants as they converse about their experiences with the special education system both personally and professionally.
