An <a href=\"https:\/\/catalog.uwm.edu\/opportunities-resources\/accelerated-graduate-degrees\/#programstext\">accelerated pathway now available<\/a>!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-professional-titles-credentials-nbsp\"><strong>Professional Titles\/Credentials<\/strong><strong><\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The professional titles\/credentials in the field of nutrition and dietetics include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Registered Dietitian (RD) or Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) which requires at least a master&#8217;s degree.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Nutrition &amp; Dietetic Technician, Registered (NDTR) which requires an associate degree or higher. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>You can earn these credentials by completing a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eatrightpro.org\/acend\/accredited-programs\/about-accredited-programs\">program accredited by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics<\/a> (ACEND), which includes coursework and\/or supervised practice, and then passing a national credentialing exam. Because of required foundational coursework in the natural and social sciences, combined with the rich array of nutritional sciences courses, you will graduate ready to apply your knowledge and skills in many professional settings including health care, food and neutraceutical industries, community nutrition and public health organizations, and fitness\/wellness companies. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are interested in continuing your education beyond the bachelor&#8217;s degree, <strong>you will be well-positioned for graduate education in a wide-array of fields<\/strong>, as well as for professional degree programs in public health, medicine, dentistry, pharmacy and more!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-want-to-get-started-in-the-nutritional-sciences-major-or-sample-some-courses-in-this-dynamic-exciting-field-of-study-nbsp\"><strong>Want to get started in the Nutritional Sciences major or sample some courses in this dynamic, exciting field of study? <\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Consider enrolling in one or more of these nutrition degree introductory courses (no prerequisites required):&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/nextcatalog.uwm.edu\/search\/?P=NUTR%20101\"><strong>NUTR 101<\/strong><\/a><strong> New Student Seminar in Nutritional Sciences &amp; Pre-Dietetics.<\/strong> This 1-credit fall course will introduce you to the field of nutritional sciences and dietetics, career opportunities, and how to maximize your time studying this discipline at 51ÁÔÆæ.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/nextcatalog.uwm.edu\/search\/?P=NUTR%20110\"><strong>NUTR 110<\/strong><\/a><strong> Introduction to Food Principles &amp; Preparation.<\/strong> This 3-credit hands-on course is offered every fall and spring semester in the Applied Foods Lab in Enderis Hall. You will build life skills related to food preparation all the while learning more about nutritional sciences through the science of food.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/nextcatalog.uwm.edu\/search\/?P=NUTR%20230\"><strong>NUTR 230<\/strong><\/a><strong> Health Aspects of Exercise and Nutrition.<\/strong> This 3-credit course will introduce you to key concepts related to personal physical fitness and healthy eating. If you are interested in learning about and improving your own fitness and eating behaviors, this is a great class to take. Plus it counts as a Natural Science GER!&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/nextcatalog.uwm.edu\/search\/?P=NUTR%20241\"><strong>NUTR 241<\/strong><\/a><strong> Why We Eat What We Eat: An Ecological Approach.<\/strong> To facilitate dietary change, it is critical to understand what drives behavior. This 3-credit course offered in the fall and summer offers you the opportunity to &#8220;dig-in&#8221; to the complex array of influences &#8211; both seen and unseen &#8211; that shape an individual&#8217;s food choices and eating behavior. Plus it counts as a Social Science GER!&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-employment-outlook\">Employment Outlook<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Federal Reserve Bank of New York recently tracked the unemployment rate for recent college graduates ages 22 to 27, and found that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.entrepreneur.com\/business-news\/college-majors-with-the-lowest-unemployment-rates-report\/491781\">recent college graduates with a degree in Nutritional Science had some of the lowest unemployment rates at 0.4%<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the Occupational Outlook Handbook, employment opportunities are expected to increase about as fast as the average for all occupations. Job growth will result from an increasing emphasis on disease prevention through improved dietary habits. A growing and aging population will boost demand for nutrition-related programming and expertise in hospitals, residential care facilities, schools, prisons, community health programs, and home healthcare agencies. Public interest in food and nutrition, and increased emphasis on health education, will also spur demand for professionals in this field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>BS in Nutritional Sciences graduates can be employed by a wide-variety of organizations:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Community nutrition programs (Women, Infants, &amp; Children \u2013 better known as WIC, nutrition education programs)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Non-governmental organizations<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fitness\/wellness companies<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Major research centers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Biotechnology, pharmaceutical and nutraceutical industries<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Specialized skills or training such as service learning with local, national, or international community organizations, research experience, bilingual proficiency, or journalism courses and experience, make students more competitive for other specialized jobs, including:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Food security advocacy groups (food banks, anti-poverty organizations)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Health advocacy organizations (preventing osteoporosis, cancer, or heart disease)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Groups\/agencies working to increase food security (farmers&#8217; market organizers, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program [formerly called food stamps] as educators or administrators).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Graduates with a BS in Nutritional Sciences can further their education through:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Graduate programs in dietetics, such as 51ÁÔÆæ&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/publichealth\/academics\/mph-nutrition-dietetics\/\">MPH &#8211; Nutrition and Dietetics<\/a>. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Medical school<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dental school<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Schools of osteopathy, pharmacy, podiatry, optometry, physical therapy, and physician assistant programs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div id=\"tab-485p-admission\" class=\"uwm-p-tabcontent--pane\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-declaring-your-intent\">Declaring Your Intent<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Students who are accepted to 51ÁÔÆæ with an interest in Nutritional Sciences will be directly admitted to the major. The large number of elective credits enables students to customize their plan of study to include one or more of 51ÁÔÆæ\u2019s many minors and\/or undergraduate certificate programs.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We now offer an accelerated pathway from our BS Nutritional Sciences to Master of Public Health-Nutrition and Dietetics Graduate Program. This program allows high achieving undergraduates to save time and money by <strong>completing their bachelor\u2019s and master\u2019s degree in public health in only 5 years! <\/strong>Successful completion of both degrees \u201cunlocks\u201d the opportunity to sit for the RDN credentialing exam.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The BS in Nutritional Sciences&nbsp;prepares students to apply to many ACEND-accredited graduate programs in Dietetics, such as 51ÁÔÆæ\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/publichealth\/academics\/mph-nutrition-dietetics\/\">MPH-Nutrition and Dietetics program<\/a>. The number of elective credits needed to meet the 120 credit requirement to be awarded the B.S. Nutritional Sciences degree will vary somewhat student to student depending upon the Chemistry sequence chosen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-program-retention-and-graduation-requirements\"><strong>Program Retention and Graduation Requirements<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Nutritional Sciences program faculty and staff are deeply committed to facilitating student success. Regular open, honest communication with the Program Advisor, Program Director, and Program faculty and staff is strongly encouraged and will help students succeed in the program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once admitted to the nutrition degree program, students must maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.50 and earn a grade of C or better in all Nutritional Sciences (NUTR) courses counting towards degree requirements. Should the need arise, Nutritional Sciences (NUTR) courses counting towards degree requirements may be repeated once; no courses repeat restrictions are placed on other courses. If a student&#8217;s cumulative 51ÁÔÆæ GPA falls below 2.50, they will be placed on academic probation and encouraged to meet with the Program Advisor to develop an action plan.
