A submajor is a prescribed set of courses a student pursuing a degree in a major can take that complements a major or emphasizes a specialty within a major. The definition of submajor includes terms such as area of interest, specialization, area, concentration, emphasis, field, focus, option, sequence, and track (collectively referred to as \u201csubmajor\u201d in this document). The number of credits required for a submajor varies widely, depending on the field of study. This policy requires a minimum of 12 credits for a submajor. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Creating a Submajor<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Review the Academic Approval Matrix (SAAP 01-01)<\/a> to see the steps required for approval of the submajor proposal by the requisite governing bodies.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The proposal should address the following requirements: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Program Identification<\/h4>\n\n\n\n
    \n
  1. Title of the proposed submajor. <\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. Department(s) or functional equivalent(s) sponsoring the submajor. <\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. College(s), school(s), or functional equivalent(s). <\/li>\n\n\n\n
  4. Timetable for initiation. <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    Rationale<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

    Discuss the reason(s) for establishing a new submajor in this area of study. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Institutional Context<\/h4>\n\n\n\n
      \n
    1. Relationship to the mission of the institution. <\/li>\n\n\n\n
    2. Relationship to the Academic Plan. <\/li>\n\n\n\n
    3. Relationship to\/impact on other 51ÁÔÆæ programs. <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

      Need<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

      Discuss the potential demand for the program, target population, estimated enrollment, and related programs offered at 51ÁÔÆæ. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Program Description and Assessment<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

      Description<\/h5>\n\n\n\n
        \n
      1. Provide a brief narrative description of the program. <\/li>\n\n\n\n
      2. Define the nature of the program: Is it a disciplinary concentration where the goal is to achieve a measure of depth within a defined area? Is it multidisciplinary where the goal is to broaden one\u2019s knowledge and\/or perspective on a particular area of study? <\/li>\n\n\n\n
      3. Indicate the number of credits and the specific courses or choice of electives that make up the submajor program. Describe any capstone requirement. <\/li>\n\n\n\n
      4. Is this submajor program available to students not pursuing a degree at 51ÁÔÆæ? If so, contact the Department of Financial Aid to discuss if any US Department of Education regulations apply. If so, address them here. <\/li>\n\n\n\n
      5. List learning outcomes that will be attained through this submajor. If relevant, discuss profession or certification\/licensing standards that are addressed in the proposed curriculum. <\/li>\n\n\n\n
      6. Discuss any anticipated alternative modes of delivery other than face-to-face. <\/li>\n\n\n\n
      7. Identify minimum grade point average (GPA), any specific background preparation, and any other requirements for admission. <\/li>\n\n\n\n
      8. State minimum grades required in specific courses, if any, and cumulative GPA required in submajor courses.  <\/li>\n\n\n\n
      9. Transfer credit is subject to the 51ÁÔÆæ Transfer Policy. If the program has a more restrictive policy for transfer credit, that should be stated here. <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n
        Assessment<\/h5>\n\n\n\n

        Describe the assessment plan to include how the learning outcomes will be assessed, how the information from assessment will be used to improve the program, and how the effectiveness of the program will be evaluated. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

        Program Administration<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

        State position title of person responsible for submajor program (e.g., director, coordinator) and name of any committee responsible for curricular development and review, student advising, etc. Describe how such a committee will be appointed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

        Participating Faculty<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

        Provide a list of participating faculty members. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

        Resources<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

        Address issues of cost to the university and any special charges or fees.
