  {"id":3179,"date":"2026-02-06T14:56:07","date_gmt":"2026-02-06T20:56:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/policy\/?post_type=library&#038;p=3179"},"modified":"2026-02-18T15:31:02","modified_gmt":"2026-02-18T21:31:02","slug":"appendix-i","status":"publish","type":"library","link":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/policy\/library\/post-tenure-review\/appendix-i\/","title":{"rendered":"Appendix I &#8211; Some Characteristics of Departments with Effective Tenured Faculty Review and Development Procedures"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"uwm-l-row\">\n<div class=\"uwm-l-col\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-general-principles\">General Principles<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>An effective, supportive tenured faculty review and development program:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"1\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>acknowledges that a faculty career can evolve over time, can have different emphases at different periods, and is best evaluated over periods longer than one year.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>formulates and communicates clear expectations of faculty work within the context of the department mission,&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>recognizes the need to improve regularly the procedures and documentation used to evaluate faculty work.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>includes procedures that encourage individuals to work and review each other collaboratively.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>provides incentives for faculty members to do better what they already do well and to pursue professional development and curricular innovation.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>has a prospective as well as a retrospective component, that is, encourages the individuals to outline future activities in the context of department, unit, and campus needs.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>includes qualitative and quantitative measures of performance.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-teaching\">Teaching<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>An effective, supportive tenured faculty review and development program:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"1\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>recognizes that reviewing teaching involves <strong>not only<\/strong> the evaluation of classroom technique and the use of standardized student evaluation forms <strong>but also <\/strong>regular, direct peer review of teaching through classroom observation, syllabus and test review, etc.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>uses student evaluation instruments that are reliable and valid, and that members have confidence in.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>makes regular and consistent attempts to harmonize individual teaching interests and the needs of the program\/department.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>encourages individuals wishing to develop new expertise, new courses, and new ways to organize curriculum.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>clearly distinguishes between adequate and inadequate performance.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>includes actual student results as one measure of individual effectiveness.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>recognizes and rewards other forms of teaching such as advising, directing theses, coordinating multi-section courses, directing faculty development and curriculum workshops, etc.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-scholarship\">Scholarship<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>An effective, supportive tenured faculty review and development program:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"1\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>understands that scholarship can be expressed in a variety of appropriate ways (e.g., advancing knowledge; synthesizing and integrating knowledge; applying knowledge; crafting knowledge by engaging with community and the public; generating knowledge through creative and imaginative work; and representing knowledge through teaching. cf.
