{"id":2853,"date":"2026-02-02T14:53:43","date_gmt":"2026-02-02T20:53:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/policy\/?post_type=library&#038;p=2853"},"modified":"2026-02-19T11:41:24","modified_gmt":"2026-02-19T17:41:24","slug":"notice-periods","status":"publish","type":"library","link":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/policy\/library\/notice-periods-for-fixed-term-and-probationary-appointments\/notice-periods\/","title":{"rendered":"108.01 &#8211; Notice Periods"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"uwm-l-row\">\n<div class=\"uwm-l-col\">\n<p>Pursuant to UWS 10.05, if a fixed-term or probationary academic staff appointment will not be renewed, written notice shall be given to the employee in advance of the expiration of the employment contract as described below. If proper notice of nonrenewal is not given, the appointment shall be extended so that at least the minimum required notice period is provided.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-1-fixed-term-appointment-of-50-or-greater-regardless-of-funding-source\">1. Fixed-term appointment of 50% or greater, regardless of funding source:&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"uwm-c-table uwm-c-table--stripe\"><table class=\"has-fixed-layout\"><thead><tr><th>Years Employed<\/th><th>Minimum Required Notice Period<\/th><\/tr><\/thead><tbody><tr><td>0-2 years&nbsp;<\/td><td>Three months&nbsp;<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>&gt;2-6 years&nbsp;<\/td><td>Six months&nbsp;<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>&gt;6 years&nbsp;<\/td><td>Twelve months&nbsp;<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-exceptions\">Exceptions:&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If the employment contract states that renewal is not intended, no further notice is required; however, for individuals with six or more cumulative years of service<sup data-fn=\"230dfa65-45a8-4498-b2f3-74f1b95244b5\" class=\"fn\"><a id=\"230dfa65-45a8-4498-b2f3-74f1b95244b5-link\" href=\"#230dfa65-45a8-4498-b2f3-74f1b95244b5\">1<\/a><\/sup> to the University, notice separate from the employment contract is required regardless of contract language.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>For individuals with fixed-term appointments who (1) are funded by grants or other short-term funding and (2) have received notice of nonrenewal separate from their employment contract under this chapter, the individual\u2019s appointment may be extended beyond the initial date in the nonrenewal notice, without requiring another notice of nonrenewal, if additional funding becomes subsequently available and the extension (or cumulative extensions) is for a time period shorter than the notice period required for that employee.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-2-fixed-term-appointment-of-less-than-50\">2. Fixed-term appointment of less than 50%:&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>No minimum notice period is required.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-3-probationary-appointment\">3. Probationary appointment:&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"uwm-c-table uwm-c-table--stripe\"><table class=\"has-fixed-layout\"><thead><tr><th>Years Employed<\/th><th>Minimum Required Notice Period<\/th><\/tr><\/thead><tbody><tr><td>0-1 year&nbsp;<\/td><td>Three months&nbsp;<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>&gt;1-2 years&nbsp;<\/td><td>Six months&nbsp;<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>&gt;2 years&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/td><td>Twelve months&nbsp;<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-4-limited-title-with-concurrent-academic-staff-appointment\">4.
