{"id":23278,"date":"2023-04-26T15:04:59","date_gmt":"2023-04-26T20:04:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/nursing\/?p=23278"},"modified":"2024-03-11T10:33:20","modified_gmt":"2024-03-11T15:33:20","slug":"uwm-begins-training-program-to-help-alleviate-shortage-of-sexual-assault-nurse-examiners","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/nursing\/uwm-begins-training-program-to-help-alleviate-shortage-of-sexual-assault-nurse-examiners\/","title":{"rendered":"51ÁÔÆæ begins training program to help alleviate shortage of sexual assault nurse examiners"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>By Kathy Quirk<br>51ÁÔÆæ Report<br>April 21, 2023<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>51ÁÔÆæ\u2019s College of Nursing is working to increase the number of sexual assault nurse examiners, which are in short supply both in Wisconsin and nationwide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The effort will be via a new program, launching April 22, funded by a grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/nurse.org\/resources\/SANE-nurse\/#what-is-a-sane-nurse\">A sexual assault nurse examiner<\/a>&nbsp;(SANE) nurse is a registered nurse with specialized training and education to work with patients who have experienced sexual assault, abuse or incest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These nurses receive specialized training in forensics because of legal issues involved, according to Penninah Kako, associate professor of nursing, project director and principal investigator for the project. In addition to increasing the number of certified nurse examiners, the 51ÁÔÆæ project is focused on preparing nurses in culturally responsive care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cUnfortunately, Black and Indigenous women suffer the most,\u201d Kako said. LGBTQIA+ people are also among those who are also marginalized, she added.
