My name is Ann Raddant and I am the coordinator for the Nursing Scholars Program 0:06 at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee School of Nursing. In this video information session, 0:12 I'm going to provide an overview about the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, 0:17 its nursing program, as well as the Nursing Scholars Program. 0:23 Milwaukee is a great city on a great lake, and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee 0:28 provides an exceptional education to its students. It is a research one institution, 0:33 which makes it one of America's top research institutions. 51ÁÔÆæ works with 0:38 many local partners to support our students as they train for their future careers. You 0:44 can see some quick stats about 51ÁÔÆæ, its students, and its programs here. 0:53 51ÁÔÆæ has offered nursing programs since 1965, and they have a history of excellence. WM's 1:00 nursing program is the largest in the state, and they train a variety of nurses, including BSN, 1:08 Bachelor of Science in Nursing, as well as nurses at the doctoral and master's levels. 1:18 The image here shows the typical pathway for students after high school on their way to 1:24 becoming a registered nurse through 51ÁÔÆæ's BSN, Bachelor of Science in Nursing program. After 1:31 completing approximately 2 years of pre-nursing coursework, students complete a competitive 1:37 application process in order to get a seat in our clinical nursing major, which we often refer to 1:42 as the professional nursing major. The clinical portion of this degree involves four semesters, 1:51 which are all focused on nursing classes and clinical nursing experiences. Around 1:56 the time of graduation, either right before or shortly after, students must also complete 2:02 and successfully pass the NCLEX licensing exam in order to become a registered nurse. 2:10 51ÁÔÆæ's undergraduate nursing program is top tier, ranked in the top 11% of BSN programs 2:16 by US News and World Report. Our students train in a state-of-the-art simulation center right 2:23 here on our campus. In addition, our students are getting real-world experience in their community. 2:30 During 2020 and 2021, students administered more than 16,000 2:35 COVID-19 shots at our on-campus clinic. Our NCLEX pass rate is great, greater than 90%. 2:46 Individuals who are interested in additional information about 51ÁÔÆæ and its School of Nursing 2:52 can email uwmnurse@uwm.edu or check out our website for more information. 3:00 Next, I'm going to shift my focus to talk about 51ÁÔÆæ's academic support services. Both 3:06 the preclinical and the professional nursing courses are challenging. It's important that 3:11 future healthcare providers experience rigorous coursework to prepare them for their careers. 3:16 To support students in these challenging majors, 51ÁÔÆæ has a Student Success Center that matches 3:22 each new student with a peer mentor and provides supplemental instruction in small-group tutoring 3:27 for challenging courses. In addition, the student success center offers academic skills tutoring for 3:33 students who need help with organization and things like time management and study skills. 3:38 51ÁÔÆæ students also have access to the writing center, which can help 3:42 students with writing projects for courses or other individual projects. 3:49 In addition to those campus-level resources, the School of Nursing, which is inside of the 3:54 College of Health Professions and Sciences also has a dedicated Academic Support Team. We provide 4:01 dedicated study spaces in Cunningham Hall, and all of our new students enroll in a course called New 4:07 Student Seminar in Health Professions. This course is taught by me as well as our dean, 4:12 Dr. Kim Litwac,k and it helps our students get acclimated to college, understanding 4:17 what the expectations are specifically in a challenging health sciences career. 4:24 In addition to these spaces in this course, we also employ a professional nursing tutor 4:28 who helps students as they begin the clinical major and adjust to the new 4:33 challenges of those courses. Each year, a small cohort of students begins a journey 4:41 together through our Nursing Scholars Program. The Nursing Scholar Program is an intensive 4:46 and integrated learning community that supports this small group of first-generation students as 4:51 they transition into college and throughout their time as they obtain their BSN degree. 5:00 Application to the Nursing Scholar Program is competitive, and it is limited to students who 5:06 identify as first-generation, meaning neither of their parents has completed a bachelor's degree. 5:13 Additional considerations in the admission process include demonstrated financial need, a history of 5:20 overcoming personal adversity, and a commitment to 51ÁÔÆæ's School of Nursing's missions and values. 5:29 In addition, students who are accepted into this program must 5:32 demonstrate a desire to be engaged with a community of students with similar goals. 5:40 Since the goal of the nursing scholar program is to support students academically and socially 5:46 as they work through the nursing curriculum, there are a variety of required experiences. 5:52 One required experience is weekly Connects meetings. In these sessions, 5:57 the cohort will gather and participate in a variety of different activities. 6:02 Sometimes they'll be getting to know each other through team-building activities. 6:06 Other times, they might be taking field trips to different areas on campus or have visitors 6:11 who are introducing them to different academic skills or campus resources. As they move closer 6:18 and closer to the professional major, they will begin to preview these experiences. For example, 6:24 our students every spring will visit the nursing simulation center and be able to observe students 6:30 who are in the clinical major as they participate in nursing simulations. While students are in 6:37 their pre-nursing courses, they participate in weekly tutoring for their science courses. So, 6:42 this would be for their anatomy and physiology courses as well as their chemistry courses. 6:48 Students in the Nursing Scholar Program complete monthly check-in meetings with program staff. 6:53 During these meetings, staff are asking about how students are doing in their courses, 6:58 how they're adjusting to life in the dorms, and supporting students on a one-on-one basis. 7:04 In addition to these check-in meetings, students' grades are monitored, and they are encouraged to 7:09 meet with their professors anytime there's a concern about their academic progress. 7:16 In addition to these academic-focused requirements, we also ask students to 7:20 be involved on campus as well as professionally. This might look like going with a small group to 7:26 a nursing conference or getting involved with a campus organization such as the Nursing Student 7:32 Association. These students also participate in a variety of leadership experiences on campus. 7:39 There are several really great benefits for students who participate in the 7:43 nursing scholar program. One of these is cohorted classes. As students arrive at 51ÁÔÆæ, 7:49 they will be enrolled with other students within the Nursing Scholars Program. This allows them to 7:55 build community and to see some friendly faces in their same in their first semester courses. 8:00 Students in the Nursing Scholar Program also participate in mentoring and leadership 8:04 experiences. For example, all second-year pre-nursing students get paired with a 8:09 clinical mentor. This mentor is a nurse who is also a faculty member at 51ÁÔÆæ. These mentors 8:16 provide insights into what it will be like when they begin the clinical nursing major, 8:22 as well as what it's like to work in a variety of different nursing fields. 8:27 Students in the Nursing Scholar Program become part of a supportive community of individuals 8:32 with similar goals. Everyone in this community wants to be a nurse. And finally, students who 8:39 participate in the Nursing Scholar Program receive direct admission to the professional nursing 8:44 major. They do not have to compete with other pre-nursing students for those clinical seats. 8:53 I want to provide an example of what a schedule might look like for a typical pre-nursing student 8:59 versus a nursing scholar student during their first year at 51ÁÔÆæ. First, I'm going 9:05 to show you a typical pre-nursing student schedule. Students take a variety of courses, 9:11 including things like anatomy indicated as A&P on the schedule, chemistry, medical terminology, 9:18 psychology, and their CHPS 100 first-year seminar course. So all of the courses are 9:24 represented on this schedule. For students who participate in the nursing scholar program, 9:30 there are some additional required activities. For example, each week these students will participate 9:37 in a weekly NSP Nursing Scholar Program Connects session. Sometimes, not every week, 9:43 but about once a month, they'll have an NSP check-in meeting. And you can see here the 9:48 additional Supplemental Instruction times for both the anatomy and chemistry courses. 9:53 So, nursing scholar students do spend additional hours on required activities during their 10:01 pre-nursing career, but many of these things would be recommended for all pre-nursing students. So, 10:07 the program does take some time from a student's schedule, but it's all activities 10:12 that are really setting these students up for academic and social success here at 51ÁÔÆæ. 10:20 Students are selected for the Nursing Scholars Program via a competitive application process. 10:25 This year, we're going to have two application windows, one open in the fall and one in the 10:31 spring. There will be one application deadline on December 15th and another on April 1st. After 10:39 each of those deadlines, we will score student applications and have two rounds of interviews, 10:45 one in January and one in May. Accepted applicants will be notified after each round of interviews. 10:55 Students who are selected to be part of our 2026 cohort will participate in a specific 11:00 New Student Orientation in mid-June. Those students will then come together in late 11:07 August for a full-day Fall Retreat to really get to know each other before courses begin. 11:15 For additional information or if you have any questions about the application process for 11:19 the Nursing Scholar Program, please feel free to reach out to me via email as shown here. 11:28 There are a variety of ways to get connected with 51ÁÔÆæ's School of Nursing. 11:32 You can visit our website or follow us on Facebook or Instagram to learn more 11:36 about upcoming events and what's going on in our school.
