We ensure that your courses will transfer into our curriculum and also see how they fit into the sequencing of your classes. We&#8217;ll also help you understand the proper timing for applying to the professional nursing major. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our traditional nursing program is divided into two parts: pre-nursing and the professional major. Students start in the pre-nursing program and typically complete two to three years of prerequisite work as a pre-nursing student before they are eligible to apply to the professional major. At 51ÁÔÆæ, we admit students to the professional major twice a year. In the Fall semester, we admit a maximum of 72 students, and in the Spring semester, we admit a maximum of 112 students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For admission to the professional major, a committee completes a holistic review of your academics, work, volunteer and leadership experiences. There is no required number of hours for volunteer work, however, it is required and considered when reviewing students for admission. Math competency (placement score of 30+ or Math 105 or equivalent with \u201cC\u201d or higher).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Must have a minimum nursing GPA of 2.75 and at least a 2.75 in the required sciences at the time of application and prior to starting the professional major. Only calculated based on the prerequisites listed below.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Must have at least a \u201cC\u201d (2.0) in each pre-nursing prerequisite course<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Repeat Policy:<\/strong> Courses with a \u201cC-\u201d or lower are considered a failure and need to be repeated. A course may only be repeated one time. Many prerequisite courses have equivalents at other schools. Be sure to contact your academic advisor to ensure that you\u2019re taking appropriate courses. Call the Student Affairs office at <a href=\"tel:414-229-5047\">414-229-5047<\/a> to schedule an appointment or e-mail your assigned advisor.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--header\">Can I repeat a course if I&#8217;m not happy with my grade?<\/div><div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--panel\"><div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--panel-inner uwm-u-clear\">\n<p>Prior to the start of the professional major, courses may be repeated only once and with no more than two total repeats. Grades of \u201cC-\u201d or lower MUST be replaced by grades of \u201cC\u201d or higher, however, repeats of courses that have been passed with a grade of \u201cC\u201d or higher do not count against the repeat rules. The higher grade is then calculated in your nursing GPA if done by the clinical application deadline<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--header\">Is the nursing program competitive?<\/div><div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--panel\"><div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--panel-inner uwm-u-clear\">\n<p>Yes. We do not have enough clinical spots for every student, so you must apply to continue into the professional major. This usually occurs during the sophomore year, but you can apply any semester as long as the prerequisite courses will be completed by the beginning of the major coursework. We accept 72 students in the Fall semester and 112 students in the Spring semester with an average of 160 applications each semester. Applications are reviewed based on pre-nursing and science GPA, leadership\/work\/volunteer, etc. experience, a series of short interviews and an on-site essay.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--header\">What happens if I&#8217;m not accepted into the major?<\/div><div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--panel\"><div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--panel-inner uwm-u-clear\">\n<p>You can meet with your assigned professional nursing advisor to get feedback on your application. Based on the strengths and weaknesses of your application, your advisor will discuss options for retaking courses, gaining more volunteer experience or improving writing skills. Most students will decide to apply again the following semester, but some will decide to switch majors or transfer elsewhere.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div id=\"tab-du2n-after-applying\" class=\"uwm-p-tabcontent--pane\">\n<div class=\"uwm-l-row\">\n<div class=\"uwm-l-col\">\n<p>Complete the <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/undergrad-admission\/admitted-students\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Admitted Students Checklist<\/a> and attend the <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/studentorientation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Transfer &amp; Adult New Student Orientation (TASO)<\/a>. 51ÁÔÆæ is a large campus and learning how to best navigate your resources ahead of time is ideal.
