The center is <a href=\"https:\/\/collections.lib.uwm.edu\/digital\/collection\/uwmactivism\/id\/94\/rec\/7\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">named after the education activist<\/a> who helped to lead the 1970 protest.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_97837\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-97837\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-97837\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2021\/10\/uwmactivism_576_full300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-97837\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Students wait at Mellencamp Hall for services on Aug. 28, 1970, as part of protests on campus demanding more support for the Hispanic community. (51ÁÔÆæ Photo Services)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>More than five decades later, a <a href=\"https:\/\/storymaps.arcgis.com\/stories\/9de9be03c534442e93bcbc572eca455f\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">digital exhibit<\/a> called \u201cThe Roberto Hernandez Center: El Movimiento,\u201d created by 51ÁÔÆæ archivist Abigail Nye, is one of the additions to the updated <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/lib-collections\/latino-activism\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Latino Activism Digital Collection<\/a> at the university. Other new items include <a href=\"https:\/\/collections.lib.uwm.edu\/digital\/collection\/uwmactivism\/search\/searchterm\/Oral%20histories\/field\/genre\/mode\/exact\/conn\/and\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">14 oral histories<\/a> with prominent members of the Hispanic community who have ties to the university, and more <a href=\"https:\/\/collections.lib.uwm.edu\/digital\/collection\/uwmactivism\/search\/searchterm\/still%20image\/field\/type\/mode\/all\/conn\/and\/order\/nosort\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">photographs<\/a> that date back to the early \u201970s.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe truly believe that the story of Latinx activism at 51ÁÔÆæ and what transpired back in 1970 is the history of Milwaukee too,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/robertohernandezcenter\/people\/maldonado-alberto\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Alberto Maldonado<\/a>, director of the Roberto Hernandez Center.<\/p>\n<p>Staff from the center and library worked together to assemble the collection, which is now accessible online, though organizers continue to work on the project ahead of an event at the Golda Meir Library on Oct. 21 to showcase the new material. head of digital collections and initiatives for 51ÁÔÆæ Libraries.<\/p>\n<p>The Latino Activism Digital Collection update is two years in the making after the idea first arose out of planning for the Roberto Hernandez Center\u2019s 50<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary in 2020.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a labor of love,\u201d Maldonado said. \u201cThe impetus for our celebration was looking at our history and
