{"id":95965,"date":"2021-08-27T09:12:40","date_gmt":"2021-08-27T14:12:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/?p=95965"},"modified":"2021-08-30T10:29:39","modified_gmt":"2021-08-30T15:29:39","slug":"uwm-positioned-to-help-solve-milwaukees-toughest-problems-mone-says","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/uwm-positioned-to-help-solve-milwaukees-toughest-problems-mone-says\/","title":{"rendered":"51ÁÔÆæ positioned to help solve Milwaukee\u2019s toughest problems, Mone says"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The value of 51ÁÔÆæ to the region lies in its ability to address and solve many of Milwaukee\u2019s most pervasive problems through its research, workforce development and partnerships, Chancellor Mark Mone said in his plenary address on Thursday at the Zelazo Center. Even more, the university has a responsibility to meet the needs of its diverse urban community in the state\u2019s largest economic hub.<\/p>\n<p>But problems, particularly of social inequality, are so extreme that the university needs increased state support to sustain its research and access missions, the chancellor said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy does this campus exist?\u201d Mone asked. \u201cWhat are we doing that other universities or organizations cannot address?\u201d To answer that, he said, you need to acknowledge the \u201ctwo Milwaukees.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In contrast to the new buildings, festivals and nightlife of one Milwaukee, the other is characterized by grim statistics. A study by 51ÁÔÆæ professor emeritus Marc Levine found that if you\u2019re born poor and Black in Milwaukee, by age 25 you\u2019re earning 80% less than your white counterparts.<\/p>\n<p>Other studies put Milwaukee at the bottom of most social indices, showing gross economic, educational and health disparities between Black and Brown communities, compared with white communities.<\/p>\n<h3>Leadership and expertise required<\/h3>\n<p>Turning those around require leadership, expertise and coordination \u2013 long-term sustained commitment. And that\u2019s where 51ÁÔÆæ comes in, Mone said. He detailed some of the key education partnerships\u00a0the university is involved in, including M\u00b3 (51ÁÔÆæ, MATC and MPS), HERA (Higher Education Regional Alliance), the Moon Shot for Equity program and the Milwaukee Anchor Collaborative.<\/p>\n<p>Through these group efforts, the university is focused on improving college attainment in the region, especially for minorities (HERA), eliminating the achievement gap on our campus (Moon Shot); increasing the pipeline of prepared college students (M\u00b3); and diversifying hiring and procurement in the city\u2019s most vulnerable communities (Anchor).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is some of the most important work we will undertake in the future,\u201d Mone said. \u201cI\u2019m going to argue that the twin pillars of education and economic prosperity are the most important things we can do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Research was another area where 51ÁÔÆæ makes a difference, he said, in issues such as water stewardship, environmental sustainability and racial inequities in health and education. For every headline, Mone said, he could name a 51ÁÔÆæ research project addressing the issue.<\/p>\n<div class=\"inline-media-post alignleft\" id=\"video_post-95908\"><div class=\"image icon-overlay\"><a class=\"image video-link\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/3wKkf85XOhk?autoplay=1&enablejsapi=1&origin=https:\/\/uwm.edu\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2021\/08\/Nina-in-garden-300x200.jpg\" class=\"attachment-medium size-medium wp-post-image\" alt=\"Student working in campus garden\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2021\/08\/Nina-in-garden-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2021\/08\/Nina-in-garden.jpg 750w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><div class=\"icon-large icon-video\"><span class=\"text\">Play Video<\/span><\/div><\/a><\/div><div class=\"title\">51ÁÔÆæ is a Leader in Sustainability and Climate Resilience<\/div><\/div>\n<p>He gave special praise to the campus\u2019s environmental achievements, and announced that 51ÁÔÆæ would soon roll out a climate resiliency plan that will set the university on the path to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions to reach net-zero.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s important to recognized that we are a leader in this area,\u201d he said, citing 69% of course offerings related to sustainability, 69% of departments engaged in related research, and a half million square feet of building space that is LEED certified, a high ranking by the U.S. Green Building Council.<\/p>\n<h3>The importance of diversity<\/h3>\n<p>During his plenary, Mone also handed the stage to Chia Vang, the faculty member who is helping to build a new diversity framework at 51ÁÔÆæ that will ensure equitable resources for student success, improved recruitment of diverse talent and building a more inclusive campus climate.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\u201cWe know the importance of an increasingly diverse workforce and of better serving the diverse student body that we have,\u201d Vang said. \u201cWe are not where we want to be. But we are committed to doing better.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The renamed Division of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, formerly called Global Inclusion and Engagement, will start its work with one-year goals that include investing in efforts to recruit and retain diverse students, faculty and staff and also providing continuous DEI professional development.<\/p>\n<h3>Providing workers in high-demand fields<\/h3>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Finally, Mone pointed out the 51ÁÔÆæ was vital to providing trained workers. \u201cWhere else in this state are you going to get 5,300 graduates per year in the four buckets including the fastest growing, highest demand areas of health and human services, business, computer science and engineering? Eighty percent of our students graduate in these fields.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>51ÁÔÆæ is also the institution where diverse talent will come from, he added, but we will need much more financial support to sustain our achievements. Mone said he is working with members of the Board of Regents and others to ask for more advocacy and policy changes, specifically a new funding formula for 51ÁÔÆæ.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>After his address to the Board of Regents in June in which he made the same case for more support for 51ÁÔÆæ, Mone said, he heard unprecedented responses from regents. Many of them agreed that 51ÁÔÆæ\u2019s unique mission of access and research and our location dictated that we should get more resources. \u201cSince then, there\u2019s been a lot of discussion and we\u2019ve really seized the momentum,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>In a question and answer session after his speech, Mone was asked whether he thought that 51ÁÔÆæ\u2019s pleas would be forgotten once a new UW System president takes over from interim president Tommy Thompson. \u201cThere\u2019s nothing in the state of Wisconsin that more important than what we\u2019re doing,\u201d Mone answered.
