In previous <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/here-are-11-uwm-alumni-you-should-know\/\">stories<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/from-microsoft-to-madtv-here-are-11-uwm-alums-whose-work-you-know\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">we\u2019ve listed<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/lights-camera-alumni-in-hollywood\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">many of those alumni<\/a> whose accomplishments have received widespread recognition.<\/p>\n<p>Here are a few more 51ÁÔÆæ alumni who are improving the world, providing entertainment and helping guide major businesses.<\/p>\n<h2>Kirill Mikhanovsky, filmmaker<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-75218 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2019\/09\/liberty750x500-20190912_PA_IMC_802.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2019\/09\/liberty750x500-20190912_PA_IMC_802.jpg 750w, https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2019\/09\/liberty750x500-20190912_PA_IMC_802-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Filmmaker Kirill\u00a0Mikhanovsky\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/milwaukees-movie-uwm-alums-give-me-liberty-intimately-tied-to-city\/\">is co-writer and director<\/a> of the critically acclaimed film \u201cGive Me Liberty.\u201d At 51ÁÔÆæ,\u00a0he triple-majored in Russian, linguistics and film. The 2019\u00a0drama-comedy,\u00a0set in Milwaukee, follows\u00a024 hours in the\u00a0hectic\u00a0life of a medical transport driver.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGive Me Liberty\u201d premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, where it received a glowing review from a New York Times film critic\u00a0who described the film as \u201cdelightfully unpredictable.\u201d At Cannes, the world\u2019s premier film festival,\u00a0the film received a lengthy standing ovation.\u00a0The film was nominated\u00a0in three categories\u00a0at the 2020 Spirit Awards, the independent world\u2019s Oscars. It won\u00a0The Independent Spirit\u202fJohn Cassavetes Award, presented to the creative team of a film budgeted at less than $500,000.<\/p>\n<p>At 51ÁÔÆæ,\u00a0Mikhanovsky majored in Russian, linguistics and film.<\/p>\n<h2>Darian Dixon, mission operations specialist<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-92731 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2021\/05\/dixon2-750x500-60633918_1042163979323277_5036232046599471104_n.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2021\/05\/dixon2-750x500-60633918_1042163979323277_5036232046599471104_n.jpg 750w, https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2021\/05\/dixon2-750x500-60633918_1042163979323277_5036232046599471104_n-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Darian Dixon <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/alums-childhood-dreams-took-him-all-the-way-to-mars\/\">takes pictures of Mars<\/a> for a living. The 2015 51ÁÔÆæ graduate is a lead for one aspect of the two high-powered Mastcam-Z cameras, part of an array of two dozen on NASA\u2019s Perseverance rover, which landed on Mars in February 2021.<\/p>\n<p>Dixon, who has a bachelor\u2019s degree in geosciences, teams up with colleagues to construct and send the complicated computer commands for taking the photos. \u201cIt is still the basics of traditional photography, just done on a different planet in a really remote way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Recently, he was part of the team that brought back video of the first flight of the Ingenuity helicopter. \u201cMy job was navigating a complex data downlink situation and making absolutely sure that we received the Mastcam-Z footage of the helicopter flying as soon as possible,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>He\u2019s active in encouraging young people of color to go into the STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) fields. More jobs are opening up, he said, but beyond the appeal of that, the work is also really interesting.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re exploring the final frontier. It\u2019s something that fills our hearts with awe and wonder,\u201d Dixon said. \u201cI don\u2019t think you can put a price on that. You just get to look up and be happy that you are part of something that is much bigger than humanity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dixon was 51ÁÔÆæ <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/alums-childhood-dreams-took-him-all-the-way-to-mars\/\">commencement speaker<\/a> in May 2021.<\/p>\n<h2>Vuk Latinovich, soccer player<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-95318 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2021\/08\/20210324-NYCvCLB-043latinovich750x500.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2021\/08\/20210324-NYCvCLB-043latinovich750x500.jpg 750w, https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2021\/08\/20210324-NYCvCLB-043latinovich750x500-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Vuk\u00a0Latinovich<strong>,<\/strong>\u00a0who played on 51ÁÔÆæ\u2019s soccer team for four years,\u00a0was selected in the third round\u00a0of the January 2021 Major League Soccer SuperDraft\u00a0by New York City FC. In April, the team signed him to a contract through 2021, with option years through 2024.<\/p>\n<p>Latinovich graduated from 51ÁÔÆæ in December 2020 with a degree in history.<\/p>\n<p>At 51ÁÔÆæ, he <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/uwm-soccer-player-scores-academically-and-on-the-field\/\">excelled both on the field<\/a> and in the classroom. A midfielder, he was a two-time All-Horizon League honoree who earned first-team all-league and second team United Soccer Coaches All-North Region accolades.\u00a0He was captain of the 51ÁÔÆæ team for two years,\u00a0and\u00a0was a member of the Horizon League All-Academic Team, regularly making the\u00a0league\u2019s\u00a0Academic Honor Roll.<\/p>\n<p>Vukovich\u00a0has always wanted to play professionally. \u201cThere are no guarantees, but I feel confident about everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Jonathan Adashek, IBM executive<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-95316 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2021\/08\/2020-Jonathan-Adashek-1750x500-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2021\/08\/2020-Jonathan-Adashek-1750x500-1.jpg 750w, https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2021\/08\/2020-Jonathan-Adashek-1750x500-1-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Jonathan\u00a0Adashek, who graduated in 1996 with a bachelor\u2019s in political science, is\u00a0chief communications officer for IBM, overseeing a team of more than 500 people operating in 170 countries around the world. In his job, he <a href=\"https:\/\/issuu.com\/uw-milwaukee\/docs\/2021_april_in_focus\/s\/12019915\">manages all aspects of the company\u2019s communications<\/a> \u2013 internal, issues and crisis management, strategic events, social media and corporate positioning. He also leads IBM\u2019s community outreach efforts through the company\u2019s Corporate Citizenship program.<\/p>\n<p>The COVID-19 pandemic brought challenges to IBM as it did to corporations all over the world. In addition to finding ways to make sure 350,000 employees had the tools and resources to keep working safely, the company had to continue supporting clients\u2019 technology infrastructure. That included many vital operations like hospitals.<\/p>\n<p>Although Adashek earned his degree in political science, he had a long-term goal of heading communications for a multinational corporation. Before joining IBM in 2020, he helped lead communications at Renault Nissan Mitsubishi in Paris and Nissan in Toyko as well as working in government and politics.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>He credits 51ÁÔÆæ with giving him a strong base for his career.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\u201cI had some great professors and some great classes that really helped me with my thinking about issues. They challenged me. I was able to take some of that learning and apply it to some of the strategic thinking that I use in my work every day.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Daulton Varsho, baseball player<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-89122 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2021\/01\/varsho1-750x500-20200710_SummerCamp-57-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2021\/01\/varsho1-750x500-20200710_SummerCamp-57-1.jpg 750w, https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2021\/01\/varsho1-750x500-20200710_SummerCamp-57-1-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Daulton\u00a0Varsho\u00a0is the <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/off-the-charts-instincts-help-varsho-defy-long-odds-and-make-major-leagues\/\">first 51ÁÔÆæ baseball player<\/a> to play in the major leagues.<\/p>\n<p>After playing for the Panthers for three years,\u00a0Varsho\u00a0was selected in 2017 by\u00a0the\u00a0Arizona\u00a0Diamondbacks\u00a0in the Competitive Balance B round of the major league draft (the 68th pick). In 2019, he\u00a0was\u00a0named the Diamondbacks Minor League Player of the Year and also earned Baseball America Minor League and Double-A All-Star accolades.<\/p>\n<p>He made his\u00a0major-league debut on July 30, 2020,\u00a0during\u00a0a season disrupted by the pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>Varsho\u00a0played in 37 games for the D-Backs in 2020, starting 13 in center field and six at catcher. He also got five starts in left field and five as the designated hitter. He hit .188 in 101 at-bats, scored 16 runs and had three homers, five doubles, two triples and nine RBI.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was a wild year,\u201d he said in an interview early in 2021.\u00a0\u201cIt was fun, though. I learned so much this year, just being able to take that all in in such a short span of time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Varsho began the 2021 season in the minors but was recalled to the big-league team a month later. After another short stint in Triple-A, he rejoined the Diamondbacks in June and has been on the roster since then. He&#8217;s appeared in more than 70 games this year, splitting his time between catcher and outfielder.<\/p>\n<p>Analysts say his prospects look good.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne of the most athletic catching prospects in the game, Varsho has an exciting blend of offensive and defensive tools which should serve him well whether he sticks behind the plate or moves to the outfield,\u201d Baseball America said.<\/p>\n<h2>John Kissinger, engineer<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-95317 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2021\/08\/JohnKissinger750x500_20210617_TCF_IMC_4947.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2021\/08\/JohnKissinger750x500_20210617_TCF_IMC_4947.jpg 750w, https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2021\/08\/JohnKissinger750x500_20210617_TCF_IMC_4947-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>John\u00a0Kissinger\u00a0is the president and CEO of GRAEF, a multidisciplinary architectural\u00a0engineering, planning and design firm that works\u00a0with clients\u00a0throughout the United States.\u00a0He has worked on and managed such major projects as the Lambeau Field renovation in Green Bay,\u00a0the Wisconsin Center, the McCormick Place West addition in Chicago and the Calatrava-designed\u00a0Quadracci\u00a0Pavilion at the Milwaukee Art Museum.<\/p>\n<p>51ÁÔÆæ was a natural choice for Kissinger, a\u00a01979\u00a0graduate of the College of Engineering &amp; Applied Science.\u00a0His mother was\u00a0librarian at the university\u00a0and the seven of the children in the Kissinger family\u00a0went to\u00a051ÁÔÆæ.<\/p>\n<p>The Calatrava addition to the museum\u00a0remains his favorite project.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWorking with Calatrava, creating a masterpiece in Milwaukee, was a highlight of my career, he said.\u00a0\u00a0\u201cIt was a challenging project, but we got it done and it turned out great,\u201d he said.\u00a0\u201cIt\u2019s a work of art.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Calatrava addition,\u00a0which\u00a0was\u00a0Time Magazine\u2019s No. 1 Design of 2001,\u00a0is celebrating its 20<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0anniversary in 2021. Kissinger said he gets a kick out of being one of only 20 or so people who know how the\u00a0iconic Burke Brise Soleil \u2013the soaring\u00a0wings that open or close over the museum \u2013 works.<\/p>\n<h2>Sarah Parker, researcher<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-93951 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2021\/06\/Sarah-Parker-in-lab750x500.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2021\/06\/Sarah-Parker-in-lab750x500.jpg 750w, https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2021\/06\/Sarah-Parker-in-lab750x500-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Sarah Parker is a researcher at the Smidt Heart Institute at Cedars Sinai in Los Angeles, studying the underlying causes and potential treatments of diseases of the large blood vessels.<\/p>\n<p>She and her team are looking at the the molecular \u201csignatures\u201d of diseases like atherosclerosis (a buildup of plaque on artery walls) and aneurysms. Atherosclerosis contributes to coronary artery disease, a major cause of death in the country, and aortic aneurysms weaken the arteries and predispose them to rupturing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need to diagnose them earlier because they are \u2018indolent diseases\u2019 \u2013 you don\u2019t know you have them typically until there\u2019s they\u2019ve become symptomatic, which is usually pretty bad,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Parker came to 51ÁÔÆæ because she was a speedskater and Milwaukee\u2019s Pettit National Ice Center was a top training facility. She started out studying sports psychology and sports medicine, and had the opportunity to work in labs in the College of Health Sciences and Department of Psychology. She earned her bachelor\u2019s and master\u2019s degrees at 51ÁÔÆæ.<\/p>\n<p>She went on to the Medical College of Wisconsin for her doctorate, focusing on using high-tech tools called mass spectrometers to get what she calls \u201ca systems level\u201d view of biology at the molecular level.<\/p>\n<p>After doing a post-doctorate at Johns Hopkins, she joined Cedars Sinai in 2018. She has received a prestigious Pathway to Independence grant from the National Institutes of Health to help support her work. This grant helps support outstanding postdoctoral researchers to move into independent tenure track or equivalent positions.<\/p>\n<p>She credits her many mentors throughout her academic career with her success, including Professor Barbara Meyer and Distinguished Professor Fred Helmstetter at 51ÁÔÆæ.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat you get at a school like 51ÁÔÆæ is really strong researchers who also have the time and energy and passion to put into mentorship.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>51ÁÔÆæ alumni improve the world in ways big and small, ranging from sports to business to entertainment and beyond.
