MILWAUKEE_The need for more teachers of color is a constant topic of conversation among educators. But how can schools and school districts support these teachers and encourage them to stay in the profession?<\/p>\n
That\u2019s the topic of an Aug. 2 online conference from 3-5 p.m. The conference is free and open to all.<\/p>\n
Keynote speaker for \u201cWalking in Our Shoes: Understanding the Perspectives of Teachers of Color\u201d is Lynnette Mawhinney, award winning author, advocate and professor at Rutgers University. Following her talk, a panel of diverse educators will discuss their experiences, struggles and challenges. The event will conclude with feedback from those attending through a question\/answer session.<\/p>\n
The panel, moderated by Ismalis Nunez of Anew Collective Consulting, includes Shana Lucas, an instructional coach in the Shorewood School District; Nasif K. Rogers, consultant and director of equity in the Wauwatosa School District; Angela Harris of the Black Educators Caucus; and David Castillo of Equitable Systems Consultants.<\/p>\n
The workshop, part of a regular series of equity conferences, is sponsored by the University of Wisconsin System\u2019s Institute for Urban Education. The institute, based at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, provides urban education opportunities for aspiring teachers in UW System Schools. The mission of the institute is to prepare highly effective, culturally relevant and culturally responsive teachers who can serve the needs of culturally diverse youth in PK-12 schools and their surrounding communities.<\/p>\n
