{"id":92680,"date":"2021-05-04T19:00:00","date_gmt":"2021-05-05T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/?p=92680"},"modified":"2021-05-07T10:33:31","modified_gmt":"2021-05-07T15:33:31","slug":"kamala-harris-visits-uwm-to-talk-about-infrastructure-investment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/kamala-harris-visits-uwm-to-talk-about-infrastructure-investment\/","title":{"rendered":"Kamala Harris visits 51ÁÔÆæ to talk about infrastructure investment"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A black Ford Mustang electric car shared center stage with Vice President Kamala Harris on Tuesday when Harris visited the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee to promote the Biden administration\u2019s planned investment in American infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p>Harris talked at a small roundtable discussion about what the $2.3 trillion legislative package would mean for sustainable energy, research innovation and education, and she toured some of the energy research labs in the College of Engineering &amp; Applied Science to highlight a clean energy economy.<\/p>\n<p>The spending in the legislation would generate jobs and help the U.S. become more globally competitive, Harris said. She said federal government investment as a percentage of gross domestic product has declined over the past 25 years.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_92682\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-92682\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-92682\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2021\/05\/kamalamone300x200-20210504_IMC_EH_011.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-92682\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">51ÁÔÆæ Chancellor Mark Mone greets Vice President Kamala Harris (clockwise from right), Sen. (51ÁÔÆæ Photo\/Elora Hennessey)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cWe must be able to compete,\u201d she said.\u00a0\u201cInnovation will make things easier for American families and will create jobs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It was fitting that Harris visited Milwaukee, 51ÁÔÆæ Chancellor Mark Mone said, because the city had once been the machine shop of the nation. But now the area needs smart investments in energy and manufacturing to create the innovations necessary to solve current-day problems.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have a passion for action, some would say a passion for traction, if you look at the all-electric Mustang on display here,\u201d 51ÁÔÆæ Chancellor Mark Mone told Harris. \u201cIt\u2019s an example of the kind of transformative research we do at 51ÁÔÆæ.\u201d And part of that story involved making electric vehicles more commercially viable.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_x_MsoNormal\">51ÁÔÆæ was chosen as a stop on Harris\u2019 promotion tour in part because of its longstanding work with businesses to improve their energy efficiency and reduce their carbon footprints. The\u00a0U.S. Department of Energy<span class=\"x_x_Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0has supported\u00a0<\/span>an Industrial Assessment Center at 51ÁÔÆæ for more than 20 years. Through the IAC, teams of faculty and 51ÁÔÆæ students identify reduction strategies for energy and water consumption for area medium-sized manufacturers, while providing training the future energy engineers.<span class=\"x_x_Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_x_MsoNormal\">The Department of Energy currently funds the IAC program at 31 universities. The center at 51ÁÔÆæ, directed by Ryoichi Amano, professor of mechanical engineering, is the only one in Wisconsin.<\/p>\n<h3>Moving science forward<\/h3>\n<p>Wilkistar Otieno, associate professor of industrial manufacturing and assistant director of 51ÁÔÆæ\u2019s Industrial Assessment Center, participated in the roundtable discussion, which was moderated by Joan Prince, a 51ÁÔÆæ vice chancellor emerita. Otieno described the research and development gains that additional investment would bring, including next-generation lithium-ion battery systems for electric cars, new strategies for more efficient manufacturing and electricity generated from wastewater treatment plants.<\/p>\n<div class=\"inline-media-post alignright\" id=\"video_post-28966\"><div class=\"image icon-overlay\"><a class=\"image video-link\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/vq2wGGVgkCk?autoplay=1&enablejsapi=1&origin=https:\/\/uwm.edu\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2016\/02\/JFK-300x200.jpg\" class=\"attachment-medium size-medium wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2016\/02\/JFK-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2016\/02\/JFK.jpg 750w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><div class=\"icon-large icon-video\"><span class=\"text\">Play Video<\/span><\/div><\/a><\/div><div class=\"title\">Presidents and contenders who visited 51ÁÔÆæ<\/div><\/div>\n<p>\u201cThe research dollars that we attract enables us to move science forward and to look at what comes next,\u201d Otieno said.<\/p>\n<p>Also on the panel were U.S. Rep. Gwen Moore; U.S. Sen. Tammy Baldwin; Joan Johnson, director of the Milwaukee Public Library; and Damaris Ayala, principal of Lincoln Avenue Community School in Milwaukee.<\/p>\n<p>Baldwin thanked the Biden-Harris administration for investing in people \u2013 not only in Wisconsin, but across the country.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe make things here (in Milwaukee). It\u2019s what we do here,\u201d Baldwin said. \u201cAnd we all know that when you make things, it all begins with research.
