{"id":83869,"date":"2020-06-15T17:06:13","date_gmt":"2020-06-15T22:06:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/?p=83869"},"modified":"2024-09-27T10:00:51","modified_gmt":"2024-09-27T15:00:51","slug":"head-of-epa-visits-uwm-announces-funding-to-keep-trash-out-of-lake","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/head-of-epa-visits-uwm-announces-funding-to-keep-trash-out-of-lake\/","title":{"rendered":"Head of EPA visits 51ÁÔÆæ, announces funding to keep trash out of lake"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Andrew Wheeler visited 51ÁÔÆæ\u2019s School of Freshwater Sciences on Monday to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/newsreleases\/epa-administrator-wheeler-awards-first-ever-trash-free-waters-grant-great-lakes\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">announce a $492,000 grant<\/a> for the Harbor District in Milwaukee to build and install a trash collector on the Kinnickinnic River designed to help protect Lake Michigan.<\/p>\n<p>The grant to Harbor District Inc. is the first awarded by the federal agency as part of the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/trash-free-waters\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Trash Free Waters program<\/a>. The Harbor District\u2019s offices are at the School of Freshwater Sciences, which is one of the anchor tenants of the district located south of downtown.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_83870\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-83870\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-83870\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2020\/06\/epa300x200-20200615_TCF_IMC_1569.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-83870\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">EPA Administrator Andrew Wheeler talks with Val Klump, dean of 51ÁÔÆæ\u2019s School of Freshwater Sciences, during a tour of the school on Monday. (51ÁÔÆæ Photo\/Troye Fox)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Wheeler said the grant demonstrated how the health of the Great Lakes is a top priority for the Trump administration. The Great Lakes are the world\u2019s largest source of surface fresh water.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis system, once installed, will quickly become a symbol of Milwaukee\u2019s commitment to clean water, and it\u2019s a symbol that should become more powerful in the coming years,\u201d Wheeler said at a news conference on a sunny morning at Harbor View Plaza, a park adjacent to the Freshwater Sciences complex.<\/p>\n<h3>75 tons of trash<\/h3>\n<p>Floating booms would collect trash in the river and divert the debris to a collection device. Conveyor belts would move the trash to a dumpster on the riverbank for proper disposal.<\/p>\n<p>The EPA said that the project could capture roughly 75 tons of trash a year from the 16,000-acre Great Lakes watershed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA main job at this institution has been historically to study the dynamics of the Great Lakes. You can\u2019t manage a system unless you know how it works,\u201d Val Klump, dean of the School of Freshwater Sciences, said in an interview after the announcement. \u201cAnd the Great Lakes are managed. Whether we do it deliberately or inadvertently, we still manage the system.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>100 year cycle<\/h3>\n<p>It takes about 100 years for the water in Lake Michigan to be completely replaced.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo for all intents and purposes, anything that gets tossed, leaked or thrown into the lake stays here indefinitely,\u201d Klump said. \u201cAnd guess what? We drink it. So anything that goes in there, there\u2019s a good chance that you may drink it tomorrow or sometime in the future.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStopping the source of contaminants from getting into the system is important,\u201d Klump added.<\/p>\n<p>Klump also gave Wheeler a tour of the Freshwater Sciences building that started at the entrance that faces the EPA research vessel <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/great-lakes-monitoring\/lake-guardian\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Lake Guardian<\/a>, which is docked on the river. The tour ended at 51ÁÔÆæ\u2019s research boat, the <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/sailing-into-the-future-new-research-vessel-will-boost-study-of-great-lakes\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Neeskay<\/a>, which also sets sail from the Inner Harbor on the Kinnickinnic.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter years of neglect and decline, the Kinnickinnic River is experiencing a rebirth as local and federal partners remove concrete channel, restore its banks and clean its waters,\u201d Harbor District executive director Lillith Fowler said. \u201cOur community is anxious to get to work
