{"id":78555,"date":"2020-01-10T10:00:49","date_gmt":"2020-01-10T16:00:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/?p=78555"},"modified":"2020-01-09T14:35:05","modified_gmt":"2020-01-09T20:35:05","slug":"uwm-offers-accelerated-dual-degree-program-in-athletic-training-with-wisconsin-lutheran-college-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/uwm-offers-accelerated-dual-degree-program-in-athletic-training-with-wisconsin-lutheran-college-2\/","title":{"rendered":"51ÁÔÆæ offers accelerated, dual degree program in athletic training with Wisconsin Lutheran College"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>51ÁÔÆæ has signed the first of a planned series of agreements with area universities and colleges to provide an accelerated, dual degree program for students interested in pursuing a career in athletic training.<\/p>\n<p>Through a new partnership with Wisconsin Lutheran College, students will be able to earn both a bachelor of science degree in sport and exercise science from Wisconsin Lutheran and a\u00a0master of science degree in athletic training (MSAT) from 51ÁÔÆæ\u2019s College of Health Sciences in just five years. It takes six years to finish both degrees in the traditional format.<\/p>\n<p>Through the dual degree program, called a 3+2 program, WLC students complete three years of undergraduate coursework and then transition to 51ÁÔÆæ for their last two years.<\/p>\n<p>The accelerated dual degree program has been available to 51ÁÔÆæ undergraduate kinesiology students since last year. The first 51ÁÔÆæ students enrolled will begin their professional phase (the last two years) this summer.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_78557\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-78557\" style=\"width: 250px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-78557\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2020\/01\/Earl-Boehm250x300-09282016_DSR_CHS_D5D2367-250x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"300\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-78557\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jennifer Earl-Boehm<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>51ÁÔÆæ hopes to sign similar agreements with other partners, making the accelerated program available to a wider pool of college students.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are thrilled to establish this partnership, giving WLC students the opportunity to save tuition expenses and enter the workforce sooner,\u201d said Jennifer Earl-Boehm, 51ÁÔÆæ\u2019s MSAT program director. \u201cExpanding this program to other colleges in the future will give more students from Wisconsin and the region access to MSAT education in the diverse urban environment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The demand for professional athletic trainers is expected to grow 19% through 2028, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. While a bachelor\u2019s degree and licensure\/certification are typically required, many employers prefer master\u2019s-prepared athletic trainers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis dual degree program positions our graduates for future career advancement and leadership right out of the gate,\u201d said Rachel Kuehl, head of Wisconsin Lutheran\u2019s sport and exercise science program.<\/p>\n<p>More
