It\u2019s a role he embraces more than two decades after he dropped out of high school at age 16.<\/p>\n<p>Sokolowski manages the M<sup>3\u00a0<\/sup>Early College program, which allows Milwaukee Public Schools high school students to earn college credit at 51ÁÔÆæ and Milwaukee Area Technical College. M<sup>3\u00a0<\/sup>(pronounced M-cubed) is a multifaceted collaboration of those three organizations, and among its many goals are boosting student achievement and closing the equity gap in educational attainment.<\/p>\n<p>Sokolowski\u2019s story has the power to motivate students. He returned to school to get a GED diploma and eventually graduated magna cum laude from 51ÁÔÆæ in 2007 with bachelor\u2019s degrees in Africology as well as educational policy and community studies. He earned a master\u2019s degree in sociology from 51ÁÔÆæ two years later.<\/p>\n<p>Along the way, he fought to overcome financial hardship and wrestled with personal issues. He\u2019s open about such struggles with his students because so many of them are experiencing similar things.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf I wouldn\u2019t have gone the path that I went,\u201d he says, \u201cI couldn\u2019t connect to students in the way that I do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sokolowski benefitted from 51ÁÔÆæ\u2019s McNair Program, which is designed to increase the number of students from disadvantaged or underrepresented backgrounds in graduate studies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat program really changed my life,\u201d Sokolowski says. \u201cI was a good student, but that program really put me on a trajectory to be a scholar.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He\u2019s worked at MPS since 2012, with a particular focus on promoting college awareness and readiness, making him a natural fit for the M<sup>3\u00a0<\/sup>Early College program. And sometimes, students get a glimpse of the former hip-hop musician\u2019s other talents.<\/p>\n<p>At a May 2019 celebration for the program\u2019s inaugural 32 graduates \u2013 attended by 51ÁÔÆæ Chancellor Mark Mone, MPS Superintendent Keith Posley and MATC President Vicki Martin \u2013 Sokolowski closed the ceremony by performing a spoken-word piece titled \u201cGED to Graduate Degrees.\u201d Both he and his students earned rousing ovations.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>James Sokolowski battled through challenges to get his GED and eventually a master\u2019s.
