{"id":77481,"date":"2019-11-25T10:27:29","date_gmt":"2019-11-25T16:27:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/?p=77481"},"modified":"2024-09-27T10:01:44","modified_gmt":"2024-09-27T15:01:44","slug":"discovery-worlds-heroes-of-science-gallery-features-uwm-dean","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/discovery-worlds-heroes-of-science-gallery-features-uwm-dean\/","title":{"rendered":"Discovery World\u2019s \u2018Heroes of Science\u2019 gallery features 51ÁÔÆæ dean"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"BodyA\">The dean of 51ÁÔÆæ\u2019s Graduate School and physics professor Marija Gajdardziska-Josifovska has been selected to be featured in <span class=\"Hyperlink0\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoveryworld.org\/\">Discovery World\u2019s<\/a> <\/span><span class=\"None\">\u201cHeroes of Science\u201d gallery.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"BodyA\"><span class=\"None\">\u201c<\/span><span class=\"Hyperlink1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoveryworld.org\/things-to-do\/exhibits\/heroes-of-science\/\">Heroes of Science<\/a><\/span><span class=\"None\">\u201d is a temporary 3D gallery experience produced in the recently remodeled mezzanine level of Discovery World&#8217;s Technology Building.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"BodyA\"><span class=\"None\">A selection of 37 posters features the unsung heroes of science, engineering, astronautics and research. Two of the posters feature Milwaukee scientists, including Gajdardziska-Josifovska. Guests wear 3D glasses to tour the interactive gallery and uncover hidden messages.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"BodyA\"><span class=\"None\">\u201cWe wanted to highlight a few extraordinary people who have done some incredible science and have changed the world in some way,\u201d said Ryan Kresse, Discovery World&#8217;s senior exhibit content strategist. \u201cThis experience tells the surprising stories of interesting people who did or are doing remarkable work.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"BodyA\"><span class=\"Hyperlink0\"><a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/physics\/people\/gajdardziska-josifovska-marija\/\">Gajdardziska-Josifovska<\/a> <\/span><span class=\"None\">was selected for her research on the behavior of nanomaterials used for sustainable energy and environmental applications. She and another 51ÁÔÆæ physics professor, Carol Hirschmugl, developed a material not found in nature called graphene monoxide, which is used as an electrode in the lithium-ion batteries that are found in electric cars and consumer technologies. Gajdardziska-Josifovska and Hirschmugl founded a startup company, <\/span><span class=\"Hyperlink0\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.safelimaterials.com\/\">SafeLi LLC<\/a><\/span><span class=\"None\">, to commercialize the material and sell battery components that improve battery life and storage in electronic and wireless power devices.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>&#8216;It&#8217;s an honor&#8217;<\/h3>\n<p class=\"BodyA\"><span class=\"None\">As the founder and director of the Laboratory for High Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy in 51ÁÔÆæ\u2019s physics department, Gajdardziska-Josifovska is pictured in the gallery with her <\/span><span class=\"Hyperlink0\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hitachi-hightech.com\/eu\/product_list\/?ld=sms2&amp;md=sms2-1&amp;version=\">Hitachi microscope<\/a> <\/span><span class=\"None\">and statements about what fascinates her about physics and microscopy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"BodyA\"><span class=\"None\">\u201cIt\u2019s an honor,\u201d Gajdardziska-Josifovska said in response to her selection. \u201cI think it\u2019s a huge privilege to work on a question that nobody in the whole world knows the answer to, and it still gives me goosebumps.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"BodyA\"><span class=\"None\">Gajdardziska-Josifovska joined 51ÁÔÆæ\u2019s physics department in 1993 as its first female faculty member and is the first woman to hold the position as the university&#8217;s graduate school dean.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"BodyA\"><span class=\"None\">\u201cIn physics, the science we work on is genderless,\u201d Gajdardziska-Josifovska said. \u201cI was lucky to grow up in a place where nobody told me that physics was just for boys.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Scientists can be anybody<\/h3>\n<p class=\"BodyA\"><span class=\"None\">She is one of only two 51ÁÔÆæ recipients to win the <\/span><span class=\"Hyperlink0\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nsf.gov\/awards\/pecase.jsp\">Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers<\/a> <\/span><span class=\"None\">in 1995, which is awarded by the U.S. government to professionals in the early stages of their research.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"BodyA\"><span class=\"None\">\u201cGajdardziska-Josifovska is probably the most successful scientist I&#8217;ve ever had the chance to talk with,\u201d Kresse said. \u201cShe\u2019s completely wonderful, and the technologies that she and her team are developing around graphene monoxide are fascinating.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"BodyA\"><span class=\"None\">\u201cHeroes of Science\u201d aims to showcase the idea that scientists can be anybody. By humanizing the people behind the math and the research, the experience encourages curiosity, drive, determination, intelligence and interest community-wide, Kresse said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"BodyA\"><span class=\"None\">Gajdardziska-Josifovska pondered the question of what a scientist looks like to her.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"BodyA\"><span class=\"None\">\u201cI\u2019ve always felt that scientists are portrayed by the media in the most erroneous way,\u201d she said. \u201cWe\u2019re either Dr. Goofball or Dr. Evil and nobody in between. I think a scientist is someone who gets excited when there is no answer to a question yet rather than being scared or disappointed.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Open through end of the year<\/h3>\n<p class=\"BodyA\"><span class=\"None\">The gallery features other scientists such as Deborah Jin, who invented the first <\/span><span class=\"Hyperlink0\"><a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/science-news\/science-at-nasa\/2004\/12feb_fermi\">fermionic condensate<\/a><\/span><span class=\"None\">; James Edward West, who created the <\/span><span class=\"Hyperlink0\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biography.com\/inventor\/james-west\">type of microphone<\/a> <\/span><span class=\"None\">used in smartphones and speakers; Emmy Noether, who contributed to <\/span><span class=\"Hyperlink0\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencenews.org\/article\/emmy-noether-theorem-legacy-physics-math\">mathematical breakthroughs in quantum mechanics<\/a><\/span><span class=\"None\">; and Walter Lincoln Hawkins, who developed a <\/span><span class=\"Hyperlink0\"><a href=\"https:\/\/lemelson.mit.edu\/resources\/w-lincoln-hawkins\">durable plastic additive<\/a><\/span><span class=\"None\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"BodyA\"><span class=\"None\">Coinciding with Discovery World\u2019s <\/span><span class=\"Hyperlink0\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoveryworld.org\/calendar-of-events\/girls-stem\/\">Girls &amp; STEM<\/a> <\/span><span class=\"None\">event, the \u201cHeroes of Science\u201d experience promotes the idea that everyone is a \u201cscience person\u201d with an intricate, curious brain that works to make sense of the complex and dynamic planet and universe, Kresse said. The gallery is expected to be open through the end of the year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"BodyA\"><span class=\"None\">\u201cWhen you do science, you end up playing like a kid who is learning about the world and asking questions,\u201d Gajdardziska-Josifovska said. \u201cBeing published in journals everywhere on the planet is almost like a form of immortality because what you discover about how the
