  {"id":76088,"date":"2019-10-11T14:33:01","date_gmt":"2019-10-11T19:33:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/?p=76088"},"modified":"2019-10-25T15:06:22","modified_gmt":"2019-10-25T20:06:22","slug":"deyang-qu-awarded-1-25-million-for-lithium-ion-battery-research","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/deyang-qu-awarded-1-25-million-for-lithium-ion-battery-research\/","title":{"rendered":"Deyang Qu awarded $1.25 million for lithium-ion battery research"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Renewable energy expert Deyang Qu was recently awarded a $1.25 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy to fund research on high-energy, solid-state battery systems for electric vehicles.<\/p>\n<p>In his project, Qu, the Johnson Controls Endowed Professor in Energy Storage Research (a collaborative appointment between 51ÁÔÆæ, Johnson Controls and UW-Madison), tackles the roadblock to improving energy storage in lithium-ion, or li-ion, batteries.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_76089\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-76089\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-76089\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2019\/10\/qu300x200-20171206_PA_Qu_940-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-76089\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Deyang Qu<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Li-ion batteries are used in electric cars, but one challenge keeping these vehicles from more widespread use is the battery\u2019s limited energy storage capacity. Batteries with a greater storage capacity \u2013 or density \u2013 would allow the vehicles to travel longer between charging and charge quicker. Three scientist-pioneers involved in the development of li-ion batteries just <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nobelprize.org\/prizes\/chemistry\/2019\/summary\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">won the Nobel Prize in chemistry for 2019<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Qu aims to take the technology to the next level by addressing the main obstacle to boosting energy density: dendrites, which are unwanted microscopic fibers that grow on lithium\u2019s surface. Dendrites can also short-circuit the batteries, leading to fires or explosions.<\/p>\n<p>Dendrites form on the anode part of the battery during charging and discharging,\u00a0Qu said. His research will focus on creating a dynamic protection layer that will prevent this during battery\u00a0cycling.<\/p>\n<p>Qu said he is excited to play a part in addressing the problem of global warming. \u201cClimate change and catastrophic weather have come in large part from vehicles burning fossil fuels,\u201d he said. \u201cIf I can contribute to making a battery that lasts significantly longer, that would be like hitting a home run. This has become my passion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Qu leads the energy-storage research at 51ÁÔÆæ, where he worked with Johnson Controls (now Clarios) on batteries that supported the then-emerging start-stop technology, which reduces vehicle fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emissions by about 5%. In addition to li-ion battery research, he focuses on increasing the performance of lead-acid batteries, lithium-air and lithium-sulfur battery technologies for electric
