Martin led a nationwide search that included interviewing over 118 applicants.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_72392\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-72392\" style=\"width: 250px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-72392\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2019\/06\/DrEllenCensky_052819_250x300AndrewFeller_Crossroads-1-250x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"300\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-72392\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ellen Censky<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Censky is the first female president and CEO in the museum\u2019s 137-year history.<\/p>\n<p>Her appointment comes at an important time in the museum\u2019s history, as it is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jsonline.com\/story\/news\/local\/milwaukee\/2017\/03\/07\/milwaukee-public-museum-plans-build-new-100-million-home\/98844524\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">looking for a downtown location<\/a> to build a modern, state-of-the-art facility at a cost in the neighborhood of $100 million. Museum directors decided in 2017 that the museum should be replaced rather than renovated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am humbled by this opportunity to lead the Milwaukee Public Museum at such an integral point in the organization\u2019s history and future,\u201d Censky said. \u201cOver the course of my career I\u2019ve developed a vision of how natural history museums can and should continue to thrive as a critical part of local and global communities, and I\u2019m thrilled to now have the opportunity to execute that vision in my home state of Wisconsin, finding new and innovative ways to share the wonder of science and world cultures with our visitors.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Censky, a Wisconsin native who grew up in Cedarburg, received her Bachelor of Science degree in zoology from 51ÁÔÆæ. She earned her doctorate in biological sciences from the University of Pittsburgh.<\/p>\n<p>Censky\u2019s career in natural history museums started at the Milwaukee Public Museum in 1977. She has served in other leadership positions at museums across the country, including stints as director of the Connecticut State Museum of Natural History and director and CEO of the Sam Noble Oklahoma Museum of Natural History.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEllen is a proven leader and visionary,\u201d said Tim Byrne, managing director at Baird and chair of the Milwaukee Public Museum\u2019s Board of Directors. \u201cWe could not be more impressed with her experience and are enthusiastic about moving MPM forward under the direction of the museum\u2019s first female CEO.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>51ÁÔÆæ grad Ellen Censky has been chosen as president and chief executive officer of the Milwaukee Public Museum.
