{"id":72172,"date":"2019-06-05T17:10:49","date_gmt":"2019-06-05T22:10:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/?p=72172"},"modified":"2019-06-05T17:10:49","modified_gmt":"2019-06-05T22:10:49","slug":"second-uwm-baseball-player-chosen-in-2019-mlb-draft","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/second-uwm-baseball-player-chosen-in-2019-mlb-draft\/","title":{"rendered":"Second 51ÁÔÆæ baseball player chosen in 2019 MLB draft"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Trevor Schwecke, a junior infielder on the 51ÁÔÆæ baseball team, was selected by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 13th round and 387th overall in the 2019 Major League Baseball draft.<\/p>\n<p>Schwecke is the second Panther to be drafted in as many days, and is the 23rd Milwaukee player to be selected in the MLB draft. 51ÁÔÆæ pitcher Jake Sommers who was drafted Tuesday by the St. Louis Cardinals.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_72173\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-72173\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-72173\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2019\/06\/SAP2173-300x200-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"A baseball player swings the bat during a game.\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-72173\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Trevor Schwecke is the ninth 51ÁÔÆæ baseball player to be chosen in the Major League Baseball draft in the last five years.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Schwecke is the ninth MLB draft pick from the program in the last five years and is the first-ever by the Blue Jays.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s been a crazy day,\u201d Schwecke said. \u201cMy family was in town, so I got to spend it with them, which I am extremely grateful for.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Schwecke credited the Panther program for helping him develop from a walk-on to a drafted player. \u201cWithout Coach (Scott) Doffek, Coach (Cory) Bigler, Coach (Shaun) Wegner and Coach (Drew) Pearson, I would not be anywhere near the person I am today as a player. They completely transformed me, and I am grateful for the opportunity they gave me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The decorated shortstop is a three-time all-league honoree, earning second team accolades his first two seasons with the Panthers, then jumping to first-team All-Horizon League as a junior.<\/p>\n<p>The Marshfield, Wisconsin, native racked up career numbers in the 2019 campaign and ranked near the top in most of the league\u2019s major offensive categories throughout the season. He also helped the Panthers to a runner-up finish in this season\u2019s Horizon League Tournament and finished with a .335 batting average with 74 hits, 20 doubles, three triples, four home runs and a team-best 54 RBI.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe couldn\u2019t be happier for Trevor,\u201d said head coach Scott Doffek. \u201cHe came in as a walk-on three years ago and just wanted an opportunity. He is a highly motivated person who just works and works. He has turned himself into a darn good player, great teammate and leader.
