{"id":71696,"date":"2019-05-17T18:30:24","date_gmt":"2019-05-17T23:30:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/?p=71696"},"modified":"2023-05-10T15:33:04","modified_gmt":"2023-05-10T20:33:04","slug":"theater-prof-directs-neighborhood-revival-on-citys-south-side","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/theater-prof-directs-neighborhood-revival-on-citys-south-side\/","title":{"rendered":"Theater prof directs neighborhood revival on city\u2019s south side"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cWhen you learn theater,\u201d says associate professor Rebecca Holderness, \u201cyou learn how to do a lot of different things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In her case, this includes developing an award-winning pitch to redevelop the vacant but historic Modjeska Theater in her Mitchell Street neighborhood. Holderness collaborated with a diverse team of area professionals through the NEWaukee-sponsored Co:Lab Project. The community reinvigoration competition challenged teams in three locations \u2013 Granville BID and Near West Side Partners also participated \u2013 to craft a plan to help reinvigorate their designated Milwaukee neighborhood.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_71697\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-71697\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-71697\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2019\/05\/modjeska300x200mke-polonia_37589_medium-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-71697\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">An undated photo taken by Roman Kwasniewski, shows the Modjeska Theater, mostly likely not long after it opened in 1910. Holderness says the team will use the prize money to continue planning for the Modjeska\u2019s renovation from a vacant theater and parking lot to a community center with green space and an indoor, all-seasons playground.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe team is going to stay together and work with the Mitchell Street (Business Improvement District) to get the project shovel-ready,\u201d Holderness said. \u201cIt was a very thoughtful process. In our research and in talking to the community, we felt like we had the best possible mix of expertise \u2013 an architect, an entrepreneur, city employee, anartist(me) \u2013 to rebirth the Modjeska.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The revival of Milwaukee\u2019s urban core has been a research focus for Holderness since she completed the National Science Foundation\u2019s I-Corps program last year. In addition to her teaching and research, she will direct the premiere production of the Mainstage Theatre\u2019s 2019-2020 season: the Sarah Ruhl play \u201cIn the Next
