An additional four teams won honorable mentions, splitting another $2,000.<\/p>\n<p>The 12-year-old annual competition, which is open to students in any discipline, is made possible by support from La Macchia Enterprises, the parent company of Mark Travel and Trisept Solutions.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_69519\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-69519\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-69519\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2019\/03\/New.ventures.18-300x200-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"A man and woman look at a dress in a store.\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-69519\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Alums Andrew Roznowski (BA, 2018) and Simbiat La\u2019Aro (BA, 2015) took the grand prize in this year&#8217;s New Venture Business Plan Competition. (51ÁÔÆæ Photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>First prize, $8,000: Usman La\u2019Aro <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Andrew Roznowski (Africology\/Latin American, Caribbean and U.S. Latin@ Studies) and Simbiat La\u2019Aro (Political Science\/Economics) operate Usman La\u2019Aro, a fashion boutique that sells African-inspired clothing and fabrics that are manufactured in Nigeria and tailored and sold in Milwaukee.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Second <\/strong><strong>prize<\/strong><strong>, $4,000: Triciclo Peru<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The company, founded by Amy Narr (Sustainable Peacebuilding) and Mario Diaz Herrera, sells authentic Peruvian empanadas.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Third <\/strong><strong>prize\u00a0<\/strong><strong>(tie), $2,000:\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Shelter Pawz <\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>Tach<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Through Shelter Pawz, Paige Fix (Social Work) aims to call attention to the \u201cadopt \u2013 don\u2019t shop\u201d pet movement by selling shelter-dog-inspired plush toys.<\/p>\n<p>Tach is a fully customizable business card exchange platform for iOS and Android devices. Founders include Victor Cain (Supply Chain Operations\/Marketing), Severin Brandl (Marketing), Ken Stock (Accounting), Matthew Shannon (Computer Science), Michael Turner (Economics\/Philosophy) and Arhanm Akba (Computer Science).<\/p>\n<p>The judges awarded four honorable mentions to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Victor Williamson (Computer Science) for MoAnimate, a mobile, cloud-based, 2D animation software platform<\/li>\n<li>Cheyenne McGlaston (Kinesiology) and Michael Brown-Johnson for Positive Vibes Fit and Wellness, which provides services for athletes<\/li>\n<li>Brianne Jarrett (Social Work) for H.E.I.R.S. (Her Emotions and Integrity Represent Significances) blog and podcast<\/li>\n<li>Justin Wermske (Information Technology Management\/Supply Chain Operations) and Katherine Walker (Finance\/Supply Chain
