{"id":64972,"date":"2018-11-28T16:06:18","date_gmt":"2018-11-28T22:06:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/?p=64972"},"modified":"2018-11-29T14:29:36","modified_gmt":"2018-11-29T20:29:36","slug":"uwm-teams-northern-ireland-road-trip-includes-more-than-basketball","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/uwm-teams-northern-ireland-road-trip-includes-more-than-basketball\/","title":{"rendered":"51ÁÔÆæ team\u2019s Northern Ireland road trip includes more than basketball"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>51ÁÔÆæ men\u2019s basketball team is in the midst of a road trip like no other \u2014 not Green Bay or Detroit but, rather, Northern Ireland.<\/p>\n<p>The Panthers are one of eight teams in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.belfastbasketballclassic.com\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame 2018 Belfast Classic<\/a> at the SSE Arena Belfast. The winner gets a crystal jug made by local hands, and players will perform in front of fans who are just getting used to NCAA basketball and eager to see more.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_64974\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-64974\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-64974\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2018\/11\/BBIreland2-300x200IMG_0399-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"A group of players look at a wall painted with graffiti.\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-64974\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">51ÁÔÆæ players look at one of Belfast\u2019s \u201cpeace walls.\u201d Almost 100 peace walls were constructed over 30 years during \u201cthe troubles\u201d to limit violence between warring Republican and Royalist neighbors.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>51ÁÔÆæ faces the University at Buffalo, which played in the 2018 NCAA Tournament and upset Arizona in the first round, on Friday at 4:30 a.m. Central time. Tournament results will dictate whether 51ÁÔÆæ plays San Francisco or Stephen F. Austin on Saturday at 7 a.m. or 9:30 a.m. Central time. His wife has Irish heritage, and he played in Europe during college summers and as a pro. Belfast, the capital of Northern Ireland, is known for its proximity to a beautiful coastline and rolling fields of green. Once a war zone during \u201cthe troubles,\u201d it\u2019s redefined itself <a href=\"https:\/\/theculturetrip.com\/europe\/united-kingdom\/northern-ireland\/articles\/the-story-behind-northern-irelands-peace-walls\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">as a go-to tourist destination<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to competing and being part-time tourists, Panthers players <a href=\"http:\/\/stclaresps.com\/?p=5416\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">are meeting kids<\/a> from throughout the region to talk hoops, goals and life. Before the trip, Baldwin brought in a guest speaker to teach his players more about Ireland, including the culture, politics, traditions and other facets that make it unique.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor many of our student-athletes, it marks their first time in Europe,\u201d Baldwin says. \u201cI wanted to help them make the most of their chance to immerse themselves in the Irish culture.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Other tournament teams include Albany, Dartmouth, Marist and Long Island University-Brooklyn. During the week before leaving for the games in Ireland, 51ÁÔÆæ defeated LIU-Brooklyn and Albany at UW-Milwaukee Panther Arena.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The trip was more
