{"id":60778,"date":"2018-07-27T12:58:04","date_gmt":"2018-07-27T17:58:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/?p=60778"},"modified":"2024-09-27T10:02:30","modified_gmt":"2024-09-27T15:02:30","slug":"u-s-senate-candidates-square-off-at-uwm-mainstage-theatre","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/u-s-senate-candidates-square-off-at-uwm-mainstage-theatre\/","title":{"rendered":"U.S. Senate candidates square off at 51ÁÔÆæ Mainstage Theatre"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When asked what they would \u201cpush back on that the president has said or done, and what is his best accomplishment so far,\u201d Kevin Nicholson and Leah Vukmir, the two Republican frontrunners in the race for U.S. senator from Wisconsin, pushed back against the question.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI look at the president\u2019s agenda and I say it\u2019s a darn good one,\u201d said Nicholson, a Marine veteran and self-styled political outsider from Delafield. \u201cI get you asked your question in the negative context, but this is a good agenda.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vukmir, an incumbent state senator from Brookfield, agreed and said: \u201cThe liberal elite and the media want nothing more than to bring this president down. I want to see President Donald Trump succeed. When he succeeds, America succeeds.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The candidates also debated issues including education, health care, immigration reform and reproductive rights during the campaign\u2019s first televised debate on Thursday, held in the Mainstage Theatre at UW-Milwaukee. The debate was moderated by WTMJ news anchors Charles Benson and Shannon Sims, along with W51ÁÔÆæ\u2019s Mitch Teich.<\/p>\n<p>The debate comes two weeks after the Mainstage Theatre was the site of <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/all-eyes-on-uwm-for-first-2018-gubernatorial-debate\/\">the first televised debate<\/a>\u00a0in the Democratic campaign for governor.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_60780\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-60780\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-60780\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2018\/07\/debate2-07252018_IMC_EH_015-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"People shake hands on stage.\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-60780\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The other three Republican candidates \u2013 Charles Barman, Griffin Jones and George Lucia \u2013 joined the debate for the last half hour. (51ÁÔÆæ Photo\/Elora Hennessey)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The two frontrunners debated one-on-one for the debate\u2019s first hour. According <a href=\"http:\/\/media1.s-nbcnews.com\/i\/today\/z_creative\/NBCNews_MaristPoll_MI_MN_WI_LikelyVoterTables_July2018_1807201619.pdf\">an NBC News\/Marist College Poll<\/a>\u00a0released Thursday, Nicholson led Vukmir, 38% to 35%, well within the poll\u2019s margin of error. <a href=\"http:\/\/media1.s-nbcnews.com\/i\/today\/z_creative\/NBCNews_MaristPoll_WisconsinAnnotatedQuestionnaire_July2018_1807201607.pdf\">Among Republican voters<\/a>, Nicholson led Vukmir, 38% to 28%, which is also within the margin of error for that subset of respondents.<\/p>\n<p>The candidates clashed over their backgrounds. Nicholson repeatedly criticized the \u201cpolitical class\u201d and drew parallels between his own lack of political experience and the president, saying that Trump \u201cneeds an outsider reinforcing him in the U.S. Senate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vukmir talked about her experience working with Gov. Scott Walker to pass legislation in the Wisconsin Senate. When asked if she considered herself a political insider or outsider, Vukmir said, \u201cI consider myself an activist Republican.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On the topic of education, Vukmir lamented the \u201cduplication of services\u201d and wanted to bring \u201cagencies from Washington, D.C., down to the states.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nicholson spoke in favor of the president\u2019s proposal to merge the Department of Education with the Department of Labor.<\/p>\n<p>On the issue of health care, both candidates spoke against the Affordable Care Act and in favor of consumer choice.<\/p>\n<p>Nicholson voiced support for high-risk pool plans for people with pre-existing conditions, saying \u201cWe need to get market forces into health care.\u201d High-risk pool plans offer state-subsidized health insurance for people with pre-existing conditions.<\/p>\n<p>Both candidates supported the president\u2019s tariffs, with Vukmir calling China the \u201creal bad actor,\u201d and Nicholson criticizing the Canadian timber industry and Canada\u2019s tariffs on imported dairy products.<\/p>\n<p>On the topic of immigration reform, Vukmir said, \u201cWe cannot have a conversation about DACA or any of the other parts of the immigration plan until we build the wall. Then we can talk about a process for those DACA residents.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nicholson agreed that the first step to immigration reform should be building a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border. He also spoke in opposition to allowing those in the Deferred Action for Child Arrivals program to serve in the military as a path to citizenship.<\/p>\n<p>When asked about reproductive rights, Nicholson said, \u201cI can approve judges\u2026and my expectation for those judges\u2026is that they understand that the Constitution is a pro-life document.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vukmir also said that the Constitution is a \u201cdocument that upholds life.\u201d She denied that she would approve a Supreme Court justice on the basis of overturning Roe v. Wade, saying \u201cwe can\u2019t put cases before them, but yes, I do support life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After the televised first hour, the other three Republican candidates \u2013 Charles Barman, Griffin Jones and George Lucia \u2013 joined Vukmir and Nicholson for an additional 30 minutes of debate and to answer questions submitted by members of the public.<\/p>\n<p>The three other candidates raised issues of their own, occasionally disagreeing with Vukmir and Nicholson.<\/p>\n<p>Barman was critical of involvement in foreign wars and said that any type of public transit \u201cis always a loser.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jones was opposed to raising the retirement age for Social Security and Medicare.<\/p>\n<p>Lucia said that he\u2019s \u201cbeen a Donald Trump supporter since he came down the escalator and announced his candidacy,\u201d yet he\u2019s \u201cuncomfortable with his rhetoric. I think that he goes overboard sometimes in making statements and tweets.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>All of the candidates except Barman agreed to support the winner of the primary election on Aug.
